I have an older PC with base XP on it and I am having trouble installing/running flash. Can anyone tell me what version of Flash that will support my old PC running Windows XP Professional Version 2002??? Everything else is working fine except for Flash, so I don't want to get into upgrading the operating system. I have several browsers (IE, Opera, FireFox) installed and Flash will not work with any of them. Thanks for any help.

Hi, You shouldn't have any problem running any version of Flash Player on the XP. I'm sure you have the latest Service Pack (3) Installed.
You can follow these instructions:
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Uninstaller:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Installer for IE- use the EXE Installer
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Installer for FF- use the EXE Installer for plugin based (from the same site)
Close all browser windows, you only want to be looking at your Desktop.
Disable any messenger services, as yahoo, msn, etc in the system tray(area near the clock)
Disable ALL Anti-Virus/Spyware programs as they can block the Shockwave Flash Object.
Be sure to use the Administrator Account.
Run the Uninstaller and when finished, Reboot(restart) your computer.
Now check to make sure the Anti-Virus/Spyware programs are still disabled before running the Installers.
Run the Installer for IE, Run the Installer for FF and when finished, Reboot.
Then go to this test site and test each browser:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
You may want to print these instructions to make it easier to follow. If you have any questions, let me know.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Many softwares will not run on earlier Windows versions than XP-SP2, which by itself is no longer supported by Microsoft.
However, I have successfully installed Flash Player 10.2 on Windows 2000, so there should be no problem running FP 10.2 on the base Windows XP.

I tried to install Flash 10.2 and it appears to install successfully, but it
does not work. I do not receive any error messages. I go to the Flash site and
try to display their flash test web page, but nothing.
Is there any log or debugging information that I can get to find out what the
problem is? ? ?
I did try installing it on Opera, IE and FireFox and they all do the same thing.
The Flash install appears to work, but it does not like something.
I tried to install Google Chrome, but Chrome comes right out and says my OS is
not supported and terminates the installation. At least that is clear cut.

The install logs are in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\FlashInstall.log
Do you have the Shockwave Flash object add-on enabled in all browsers?

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, for the location of the install.log. I will
check that out and see what it says.
I tried to install it on all my browsers, but I did an un-install before moving
on to the next browser.

I found something very strange.
Even though I ran the un-install program, there is still a Flash directory with
a active-x program called SWFLASH.OCX. I looked at the properties on this
program and it said it was release 5,0,42,0. I tried to delete it and it will
not let me. It says it is being used by a program or user. It also would not
allow me to rename it. I am just guessing, but this might be why it will not
allow me to install the newest version.
I am going to try to find a way to delete this program.

Hi, well as far as SP3 is concerned, Microsoft made a lot of corrections in SP2 and many improvements with SP3. Then you must realize that Adobe and Microsoft work together. Neither Windows nor Adobe are a world unto themselves, everything has to work together. I don't mean to be preaching to you, just trying to give you an idea how important it is to have the latest Windows updates & Adobe Flash Player.
The instructions I gave you would be applicable for any version of Flash Player you wanted to Install as far as the procedure goes. You have to Uninstall the version that you have now and then Install another version.
If I were you, I'd follow those instructions and if it fails, then take a look at the previous version of Flash Player. I can't really advise you on any particular FP version that would work or not work since I'd be guessing.
If you test here with each browser, let me know if you can see the Flash logo animate(spin) and what version of Flash Player is displayed. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
We can go from there.
Thanks,

Hello eidnolb,
Thank you for your help.
I agree with you on trying to keep up to date and I really should be on SP3, but
this is a very old and small PC. I don't think it will take SP3. It is low on
memory and disk space. Even though it is at its max of 384MB. It has two very
full disk drives of 8GB and 4GB. The processor is only 265mhz. It is not worth
upgrading. It is basically a dedicated computer that runs a very old and large
Paradox application. Does anybody remember Paradox??? It was old and unsupported
when we did the Y2K evaluation. Does anyone remember that?
Anyway, when I work on the application, I occasionally want to check email, etc
and all the Flash web sites fail. So I thought I would try to get Flash to run.
Most of the time this computer is not even connected to the INTERNET. So I
really don't want to change the OS and run the risk of damaging this very old
Paradox application.
So I thought if Flash version 7 or 8 or 9 would work, they would probably be
fine.
I just wish I could find a Flash log, trace or some other debugging information
to help tell me what's wrong. I checked the event viewer, but no unusual
messages there.

Hi Thanks for the explanation of the PC, applications etc. It would be interesting to know what Flash files are actually Installed, if any.
With the Specs you listed, an older version of FP should work, with the understanding of possible limitations on using it.
Also this: SWFLASH.OCX. I looked at the properties on this
program and it said it was release 5,0,42,0. I tried to delete it and it will .....
Were you offline when you tried to delete it? If not, I would close all browsers and then try.
Thanks,
eidnolb

I rebooted in safe mode with command prompt. Form the command prompt I deleted
the Flash directory. Rebooted, and something recreated the directory and
SWFLASH.OCX program. I don't have a clue what is going on. I don't know where it
is creating it from. I did find that directory specified in the registry in at
least two places. I did delete the Macromedia (or whatever it was) and
everything under it in the registry. But it all comes back. I am going to play
with again tonight.

Thanks, I think on the Reboot most likely. This SWFlash.ocx has appeared sometimes when I'm troubleshooting Flash Player.
I've always just had the user go to the Flash folder and right click on it and delete/remove it. Perhaps you have more than one Directory?
You might want to look in Program Files/Common Files. I know that these older Flash Player versions are so different and changes were made as to Uninstalling them.
Thanks,
eidnolb

IT WORKS!!!
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS.
I don't know for sure what the problems was but I suspect that an over version
was half installed and the un-installer was not removing it. So in safe mode, I
deleted everything I could on the disk and in the registery with flash in it. I
also removed Opera and Firfox and contrated on IE. Then I reinstalled it. I went
the FLash test page and got the following:
You have version 10,2,152,26 installed.
Now I wonder if I can install Opera again and get that to work with Flash. IE is
not my browser of choice.
So Flash is now working with XP base and IE 6.0

WOW, DSLMan, you're on a roll!!! And you Installed the latest Flash Player !! Good job!! I bet you were surprised! Ha-Ha
Hey, don't knock those XP's, they are workhorses:-) Still a lot of life left in them. I use the IE6 browser and fight youtube and Microsoft all of the time, trying to get me to upgrade, LOL There is a whole lot you can do with IE6, that IE7/IE8 can't do:-) That's why I keep it.
IE6 has more market share than Chrome and more than IE7, LOL Even XP isn't shabby either:-)
On Opera, well I think you may want to see what the system requirements are for using it. Firefox may be somewhat more compatible with an older system. Hard to tell. If you used it before there shouldn't be a problem. Try it and see:-)
Thanks for reporting back!!
