The Flash Player installer generates multiple log files that can provide crucial troubleshooting clues when you are unable to install.  The following FAQ describes how to locate these log files so that you can provide this information to Adobe when requested. Please read through the entire FAQ before proceeding.

FlashInstall log file

32 Bit Windows:

  • C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\FlashInstall32.log

64 Bit Windows:

  • C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\FlashInstall64.log
  • C:\Windows\syswow64\Macromed\Flash\FlashInstall32.log

Note: Both log files are required from a 64-bit OS

The file names changed from FlashInstall.log to FlashInstall32.log and FlashInstall64.log in the Flash Player 26 release.  The contents of the FLashInstall.log file are appended to the new file(s).  If requested to provide log files and you have a FlashInstall.log file in the directory, provide that file as well.

Adobe_ADM log files

Two files, Adobe_ADM.log and Adobe_GDE.log are generated by the online installer.  The files are located at the following location:

  • Vista and above: C:\Users\<YourUserID>\AppData\Local\Temp\Adobe_ADMLogs
  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserID>\Local Settings\Temp\Adobe_ADMLogs

Note: The AppData and Local Settings directories may be hidden see Show hidden files/folders (Windows 7 and above) or Display hidden files and folders (Windows XP) to view hidden folders.

Enable Verbose Logging

At times we may require detailed debugging information from the online installer logs.  When requested do the following:

  1. Create an empty text file named ADM.trace inside your %temp% directory.  The file extension itself is .trace, not .txt or anything else.
      • Vista and above: C:\Users\<YourUserID>\AppData\Local\Temp\
      • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserID>\Local Settings\Temp\
    1. To create the empty text file, navigate to the %temp% directory, right-click in an empty area and select New > Text Document
    2. Rename the new file to ADM.trace
  2. Run the online installer again until it stops
  3. When the installation stops, the Adobe_ADM.log and Adobe_GDE.log files will contain additional debugging information.

Uploading Log Files

Once you have secured all of the log files, you can compress them and then upload the single file using the instructions here:

Finally, post the link to the uploaded file into your forum post.
