"Choose a position for the autonumbering from the Position pop-up menu. Autonumbers at the end of paragraphs are rare except in equation formats." [7.0 User Guide, the last real book version I have; online documentation downloading slower than treacle through butter-muslin]
So far, so good – but 8.0p277 seems to have decided autonumbering after is not just after, but cowering up to the right margin, even when the paragraph alignment is left. Any nifty workaround?

I am not aware that paragraph numbers were aligned differently in earlier version of FrameMaker.
You're probably trying to insert a line number next to the last word in a paragraph. The following is no 'clean' solution, but maybe it'll help:
To get a line number where you want it, insert a cross-reference to the paragraph itself, which contains just the paragraph number. You can obscure the redundant original line number by applying an appropriate character format (e.g. 2pt, white, stretch to 10%).

FM's autonumbers after text usually follow equations for which right-margin number alignment is common.
One workaround is to make the text paragraphs run-ins that precede empty autonumbered paragraphs.
