Can't select text...

New Here ,

Hello,

How do I delete some text that appears to be automatically generated? (I can't select the text, and it's not on the Master Pages.)

Thanks.

> I can't select the text ...

What exactly happens?

If you select letters of some text, and entire letter groups, words or paragraphs get selected instead, there are a number of possible explanations, including:

  • variable
  • cross-reference
  • text inset
  • graphics that appears to be text
  • someone has managed to get the undocumented PgfLocked tag turned on

If the text appears to be on top of an imported graphic, you may be unable to select it at all if Run Around is turned on for the graphic.

Adding to Error 7103's list, if text is on top of a graphic, it may be

grouped with the graphic. You may have to ungroup them before you can

select the text.

And to add to Mike's addition, back at the basenote, I spy ..

The usual suspect is that the text is created by the Numbering properties of the paragraph format.

Or someone copied text from Microsoft word that really is just a link.

Thank you very much for the responses. I am new to FM. (I used PageMaker, but not in years.)

From what I can tell, there is a custom paragraph format for "Warning" in the manual I'm working on, and whenever the "WarningsLOP" paragraph tag is assigned, it throws in the word "WARNING:" in front of the text.

With track changes turned on, the "WARNING" remains after deleting the text all around it (which becomes strike-thru).  With track changes turned off, "WARNING" and its accompanying text goes away when deleting.  Not sure how this comes in to play.

So it looks like it's part of a paragraph that someone designed. My next problem: how do I edit this paragraph style?

> ... it throws in the word "WARNING:" in front of the text.

Above it or to the left?

If it's above, chances are this is a graphical object, which can include text, being called in by Advanced > Frame Above in Paragraph Designer. The Frame will be on a Reference Page.

If it's to the left, chances are it's from Numbering.

The word "WARNING:" is inserted to the left of the text. (And to the right of a graphic - the graphic is an exclamation point.)

When you click in the paragraph, and select Format > Paragraph > Designer > Numbering, what do you see?

Can you tell how the graphic alert icon is getting there?

What is on View > Reference Pages > "Reference"?

Format > Paragraph > Designer > Numbering

I'm hoping you will be able to enlarge this JPG after I post.

Paragraph designer.jpg

Can you tell how the graphic alert icon is getting there?

The graphic is an imported graphic.

What is on View > Reference Pages > "Reference"?

The reference page has 2 footnote and 2 line spacing references.

There's your answer. The Bold "WARNING:" is being invoked by the Autonumber Format (auto number formats don't have to be numbers).

The \sm is shorthand for \x14, or em space.

Your Caution, Danger, and perhaps Notice formats probably do something similar.
