Cannot import cross reference formats from template

I have a template that I have removed cross ref formats from, and want only these cross refs to be then imported into my book/document.

I have done the standard: File> Import> Formats..

I have then selected all options, and "removed other format/layout overrides". From the "Import from Document" check box, I have the correct template selected. I have also tried this only selecting the "Cross Reference Formats" option.

Yet when I complete this process, my working book/documents do not display only the cross ref's from the template. I have imported the formats to the book, and to the individual documents in the book. Neither will take the changes. Will a document only import new cross ref formats, and not delete old ones? I really am at a loss. Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.

Derek

Derek,

Have you updated your cross-references after you imported the formats?

If the formats are named identically, then FM will replace the old
ones, otherwise it will add them to your document.

I have performed a "Generate/Update" to the book file. All I have done is delete old cross reference formats, I have not added anything new, nor have I renamed anything. In my template, it shows only the formats that remain after I deleted the unused ones. When I try to import the template (and only the formats I want to be displayed as a choice), it still lists all of the old formats.

Derek, when you import formats from, let's say Doc A into Doc B, the formats from Doc A replace same-named, or get added to, formats that exist in Doc B. Other formats that are already in Doc B do not get removed.

So what you're saying is once it's there, it's there, that there is no way to remove it globally unless going through each file manually. If so, then I guess I'm at a dead end. Thanks for the info.

And if you do want the old ones to be removed and/or new ones to update, look at the CleanImport plug in from electropubs.com
