I just purchased Frame Maker 10. I am going through some tutorials and cannot get the Commands Drop-Down/Pop-Up menu to work at all. I am stuck in the tutorial because I cannot move on without the need of this function.
I have searched and found that there is a history of this issue in previous versions of FM, which was solved with updates. So, I downloaded all updates available. Framemaker update function even states that I don't need any updates.
So, does anybody out there have a solution for this?
Thanks.

Teej,
Can you describe precisely which Commands menu you mean, in which dialog/window/pod is it? Have you made sure, there is a document open which has the focus, i.e. a blinking cursor, since some actions require an active document or text selection.
You can add a screenshot to a forum post as well.

I am speaking of the Character Designer and the Paragraph Designer, "Commands" drop down menus (bottom left corner of control box/window).
I have tried to attach a screen shot, but it will not allow me to. I tried formatting the screen shot into word, pdf, and tiff. I also tried just cut and paste and drag and drop. none of the above would allow to me to attach a screen shot.

yes, I have a blinking curser clicked in a paragraph of my document, just as the training program told me to.

I think I know what you're talking about, but mine seems to work fine when I click on the Commands dropbox arrow.

That is where my problem lies. I need for the drop down to work. Can anybody out there help me get it functioning?
Thanks.

What happens when you click on it?

It highlights (with a shadow) as though it recognizes that it is being pressed (clicked on) but a drop down options box does not appear like it should.

It will create a small blue-framed pop up window that takes the focus away from your document - maybe it's hiding underneath some other windows or on a second monitor?

If it is, I'm not finding it. I've minimized everything and it is nowhere to be seen. I know what it is suppose to look like, but it just isn't there.

Is it happening on all docs?

Yes. All documents. I just tried several document types made at out corporate office, where this drop down works.

What about resetting the workspace (top right corner)?

OK, I've tried that. That didn't work either. I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling everything if I can't get an answer by the end of the week.

So you see, it works.
Have you installed FrameMaker from DVD-ROM? If yes, there have been occasional reports about problems that went away after re-installation from hard disk. Just copy the DVD content to a disk before starting the installer.

Nope, I downloaded from the license.adobe site. I don't have any hard copies of anything.

NO. I apologize. I meant that it works up at the corporate office, and it is not working now, here in my office. The problem is still there.

This is incorrect. It does not work here in my office. It did work at the corporate office. The problem still exists.

Save the screen shot as a png or jpg file, then use the camera icon in the web forum interface to attach it to a posting.

What O/S and service pack level are you on? Is your system setup to use US/UK english or any other language?
Can you give us a reference for the issue you found in previous versions, that might help somebody remember whether there was any workaround.
Just to clarify, you said "I downloaded all updates available" however there are no updates for FM10, there are add-ons but not updates that would change any core functionality.

OK, I guess, I uploaded all of the "add-ins", not "updates". I am running Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64-Bit O/S, 6GB RAM, with an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU, Ef630 @ 2.53GHz . I'm thinking that this should be working.
The reference I was referring to is through the link below. This person had the same problem I am having, only in FM9.
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3131931#3131931
Their solution was an update to a bug found in FM9.
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows
So I went to the same sight and downloaded all of the available downloads(add-ins) for FM10, knowing it probably wasn't going to do anything but, take up space, use up ram, and slow me down, but still I tried it, hoping. And, as I expected, it didn't fix the problem. I didn't try downloading anything from previous versions, figuring that all of those updates were solved issues in FM10.

This isn't much help, but the update that seems to have fixed this problem in FM9 was 9.0.2 (9.0p237).
The readme file for this update says:

More on this previous entry, from the readme description it sounds like you might have to change your workspace so that the designers (Paragraph, Character, Table) are closed when FM opens.
Perhaps one of the other forum members could give a quick set of steps on how to customize and save a workspace in FM10?
