Hello ![]()
I am using Fm10.
I have a workshop manual designed in a book, split in to chapters, sections etc.
I have a series of master pages that contain the document number, page number, date etc.
When I update a chapter/section/page, I manually change the Issue number by +1. How can I get this to automatically update on a master page? It is not good enough that I cross-reference it, as I want to apply the master page across all my books and, as far as I'm aware, you cannot apply a 'Current' cross-reference to other documents.
Does that make any sense to anyone? ![]()

I manually change the Issue number by +1
What is the Issue number presently?
plaintext, variable, text inset?
And where does the controlling instance reside?

The Issue number varies within the book.
The book has an Ops Manual, a Test Manual, a Workshop Manual, and others, so these all change independently.
I currently cross-reference the issue number in on the front cover from a master sheet.

I guess I don't understand the problem.
If the "manuals" within the book are all in their own .fm files, their Master Pages can call in different tracking objects from a variety of places.
I tried putting tracking object as hidden text on a cover.fm file, and in a separate inset.txt file. Both work.
A typical body.fm would have a background text frame on each Master Page, which would be an Xref to the hidden text on the cover, or would import the inset.txt file by reference. The hidden text trick could have multiple lines, each for a different "manual". The text inset trick would either have a separate file for each "manual", or would be a .fm file with a separate Flow for each.
Any of the following actions would cause the body.fm references to be updated to the current value from the cover or inset:
What exactly doesn't work for you?
We don't do this, by the way. Our pub numbers are echoed on each MP, but rarely change. So we do them as Variables. if they change, we update the body.fm file, and them Import Formats

Hi bowen192
Is your issue no. same as any of one of the section/sub-section/chapter number? Also when do you require to update your issue no. - is it on adding some chapter/section/ sub-section in the book or is it some other scenario?
If it is any of the above, then probably what you can do is set up the numbering properties of files in the book (right-click file in book window -> Click Numbering). Then in the master page you can use any of the variables Volume Number, Chapter Number, Section Number or Sub Section Number in place of the issue number cross-reference.
Now the next time you change add some file in the book, just set up its numbering properties too and then Update Book. Your issue numbers should automatically be updated.
Hope this helps.
