Entire Book Gets Saved on TOC, LOT, LOT Update

Hi,

I upgraded to FrameMaker 8 and had all of the updates installed recently. When I go to update the book (generate TOC, LOT and LOF), I have found that FrameMaker saves all of the files in the book during this process. This did not happen in FrameMaker 7 and the process of generating or updating these files took a matter of seconds. With FrameMaker 8, it can take several minutes because it has to save all of the files. Is there a preference setting (I could not find any) or some other method to update the TOC, LOT, and LOF without having it save all of the book files?

Thanks,

Earl

Perhaps you had all files open in FM 7, and now you have all files closed
when you update the book? Or do you have all files open also in FM 8?
Is it possible that it's the autosave function that saves all the files?

Following up on Thomas's answer... as far back as I can remember, FM has opened and closed book component files because opening them and updating information inside them is part of the book update process.

So it's not a change in behaviour at all.... I'm waiting for a 50+ chapter book to update as I type.

You can certainly speed it up if you open all the files. But there isn't a way to short circuit the procedure itself and still get current info. Also, be aware that updating the book can, but doesn't have to, include updating the generated files. You can speed it up if you don't generate the TOC, Index, and whatever else you have....

Hi Thomas,

It was the autosave function. I must not have had it checked in FrameMaker 7 or it now works differently in FrameMaker 8. Anyhow, problem solved.

Thanks,

Earl

Related and unimportant question, so I'll tack it on here ... I _think_ it's since upgrading to 8.0 that I've noticed book components flashing up briefly on screen while I'm updating front matter or saving to .pdf

Merely a matter of comfort, but if I could get back to having things run discreetly in the background I'd welcome any tips.
