Filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation

This just popped up. Worked fine on Friday and nothing has changed.

Running FrameMaker8 on Vista.

I try to open a word doc and this message popped up. I assumed it was the word doc.

I try to open another word doc, from a different source and I get this message again.

So I try to open a word doc that I've already opened and have typeset and saved in Frame with no problem, and I get the error again.

I go to a different machine, running plain 'ol Windows, and try to open the docs in Frame 7. Again, a filter error.

I change from Structured mode to regular Frame and I still get the error.

I don't even know where to start looking. Frame 7 has been on my desktop (my backup machine) since it was released and the error is occuring with files I've already opened and worked with.

Frame 8 on my notebook worked fine on Friday.

Where do I start? Two different machines. Two different OS. Two different versions of Frame. Docs from different sources that had worked no longer open.

Dottie,

Try saving the Word file as RTF (from Word) and then import that. Has
anything changed in the Word file (comments, minor revisions, etc.)?
You could try flattening and accepting changes if you have this
feature turned on Word. Another usual suspect is graphics. If any have
changed or been added, this could cause problems. Usually, it's best
to remove graphics from Word files prior to importing FM (leave
placeholder filenames or descriptions of the graphics so that they can
be re-imported into FM later).

I tried the RTF. Same thing. And nothing has changed. I'm not working on a network so what's on my laptop is on my laptop. And if there were unusual graphics or comments or anything why was I able to open a file on Saturday but now I'm getting an error on that file also.

I tried downloading the files again thinking they were corrupted on my laptop but that's not helping either.

I would reload Framemaker 8 but I'm confused why it's not working in Frame 7 on my desktop.

Dottie,
Any chance that the system(s) downloaded and installed some goodies on their own? Do you have either Microsoft or Adobe Updates turned on to Automatic?

Dottie,
I have the same problems with Framemaker 8 with the latest Patches.
It was suggested that I use the Japanese RTF translation forWord RTF
files. THIS WORKS!

I have found that i need to go back and change the special characters
that correspond to " and un-". They look like the character i in a
special format.

If you find out what caused the change, please let me know.

Ed Feustel

Folks, thanks for all your suggestions. I would up reinstalling Frame and it works fine now.

Not exactly a fix, but it's working ... on both machines.

Thanks!
