FYI, the FM 8.0.2 (aka 8.0p273) patch is now available. You must use the Adobe Updater available through the Help > Updates... menu in FM, for now. See also http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/02/framemaker_802_available_now_1.html

The main issues addressed, from the readme file, are:

These are some of the areas in which we have fixed the issues in this patch. The issue description details the original problem that was fixed. Additional details may have been added if deemed necessary.

Shortcuts:
Operations to change the Paragraph and Character tag in document using Function keys F8,F9 "time out", at an apparently random interval. Also these operations become unusable for Paragraph and Character designer when respective designers are opened.

Hyphenation:
a) Incorrect hyphenation takes place in FrameMaker 8 when accented chars are present in first few chars of a word, and when hyphenation operation is performed more than once.
b) German Hyphenation gives wrong results if word contains non-ASCII characters

Indexing:
When char format is used in markers for multi-level entries containing SAME text then the generated index has some entries missing (all ASCII data)

Solaris Menu:
Solaris Japanese FrameMaker is not able to load menu items correctly in unstructured mode

Control Characters:
a) For various dialog, if special spaces (control characters) are edited, then they are lost and are replaced with question marks
b) Control characters(Emspace, HardHyphen etc) are not mapped to corresponding character in FrameMaker as a result user needs to change font in order to display these characters correctly. While displaying these characters, codepoint should be mapped to the one used by the FrameMaker and should be translated correctly on xml save/export.

RTF:
While importing an RTF file containing object which comes as marker in FrameMaker, marker location may be incorrect in certain cases.

PDF:
Hyperlinks does not work from one pdf to another if we open the pdfs through web

Unicode:
Conversion of certain Unicode characters of Symbol / Dingbats / WebDings fonts is incorrect when an XML is opened in FrameMaker

Miscellaneous.:
FrameMaker is not responding while selecting text by mouse on Vista if Mousekey is kept pressed for long time.

"German Hyphenation gives wrong results if word contains non-ASCII characters."

This also occurs with Dutch new language. For instance with the word "ongeëvenaard". When this word is hyphenated the last text on the first line is "onge-"; on the next line al the chars are missing and the line is empty. I expected the line "evenaard"

Paul, would you post a new thread on the forum so that the issue is more widely seen by users and [hopefully] by anybody from Adobe who happens to view the forums -- in this thread it might easily be overlooked.

Are you using the FM8 applied with patch 8.0.2?

Hi Vivek,

Yes I am using FM8 with the patch 8.0.2 applied. Without the patch I got the same result. It looks like only the German version is updated.

Folks,

Has anyone tried installing 8.0.2? When I try to run the exe the install/update dialogs have lots of question marks and the text on the buttons are vertical bars. When I try on another pc, some of the text appears to be French!

I am wondering if my region (English Australia) is being detected properly?

Yes, I've successfully installed 8.0.2 on an International English
version of FM. But I used the integrated updater, not the standalone
executable. Did you try that one as well?

Chris,

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately the proxy setup here prevents the integrated updater from working. I also have a virtual environmentt, which is not connected to the production network, so I need the standalone updater.

Jon,

In that case I suspect that there's something about the setup of this
virtual environment that the updater doesn't like. Letters replaced
with vertical bars are usually a symptom of a missing system font, or
a font that is missing required characters.

I'm afraid there's nothing to do but contact Adobe support directly
(they don't read this forum). Sorry!

Chris

Jon,
Are you running FM in the virtual environment? I think that unless everything (all fonts, installation record, shared Adobe files, etc.) are inside, the installer may have a problem. I don't think that stuff can just be on the system somewhere; I think it needs to be accessible.

Art, Chris,

Thanks for the responses. I should have made it clear that I am running FM 8 on a physical computer and in a seperate virtual environment. The problem with the update occurs on the physical computer. I have not yet tried on the virtual machine, though I suspect that the result will be the same. I also tried the update on a physical computer running FM 7.1 and the dialogs were still garbled, though I was able to discern the "requires FM 8.0 p266" dialog, and bail at that point.

BTW there should be no difference between a virtual and a physical computer as far as FM is concerned. The virtual is set up exactly the same as the physical computer with Windows XP, Office, and various Adobe products.

I am on Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (just got it) and installed FM 8.0.2. I am having all sorts of problems too. I had it installed on Windows XP SP2 but just upgraded to Vista.

1. I installed v8 with the PDF add-on. (Not sure what the PDF add-on did but there is no Adobe PDF printer device installed.)
2. I patched with upgrade P266. Worked just fine (but I need 273!)
3. Rebooted (just in case).
4. I installed P273 (size - 18MB) and the prompts are in part French and all sorts of Asian languages. I clicked thru the defaults and didn't install. This is serious! I can't seem to get p273 installed. HELP!!! Any ideas???

The problem he is having is that he followed the download instructions from the adobe update section.<br /><br />http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3858<br /><br />It says there you can download the patch, run it and on next adobe framemaker launch the AUM would kick and install the patch.<br /><br />This is not so. The download link points you to some file that is 18MB large instead of 30MB which is why it is missing or has garble.<br /><br />I've been fighting with this for a long time too since I want to deploy the patch to our base users instead of installing and downloading one by one.<br /><br />Resolution to this is to let one machine download the update and once it has completed download, go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\Install\framemaker801-mul<br /><br />and copy out the framemaker802.exe file. Use this to patch the rest <br /><br />or...<br /><br />you can try to get Adobe to fix their download link and instructions however, it would appear to me that nobody is listening these days.

Hello, Ken Tse ...<br /><br />You indicate that:<br />"Resolution to this is to let one machine download the update and once it has completed download, go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\Install\framemaker801-mul <br /><br />and copy out the framemaker802.exe file. Use this to patch the rest"<br /><br />I'm a little bit confused with your instructions. If you still download the p273 update on a different system how is that going to make any difference? It still is going to be 18MB (instead of 30MB...). Also, not sure what "copy out the framemaker802.exe file means... <br /><br />Also, I have installed this on Windows XP before (even with the 18MB file size) and it worked just great! I can't imagine this to be a Vista SP1 issue but may be it is...<br /><br />Can you further clarify please?<br /><br />best regards,<br /><br />"Another" Ken - of Seattle, WA

I let the adobe update manager download and install the patch inside adobe framemaker (help->update)

adobe update manager will launch and then will prompt you whether you want to download and install 8.02 update.

You say yes and it will start to download a file framemaker802.exe to the documents and settings folder I specified.

As soon as it's finished downloading it will launch the framemaker802.exe. Don't do anything with the install yet.

At this point you should make a copy of the framemaker802.exe (30MB). You can use this for later for other machines.

Cancel the install of the patch or let it run on this one machine

copy framemaker802.exe to a network share and deploy it to your other targets (create an installshield record file if necessary)

I have a feeling that adobe website download link for the p273 update probably only works on us english versions. that's why it's much smaller (18MB)

Anyways.. if you do what I say above it will d/l the 30MB version locally and I've tested it and it works.

So you're saying that the AUM 802 executable is the entire 30MB thing (I don't know if the exe should be 18MB or 30MB but I do know that whenever i try to install either of them I get french/asian/question-marks (?????) dialog boxes during the installation and the install fails leaving 266 to still be the latest.

I will try what you say but what I have just done on my single Vista SP1 system is:
1. Deactivated FM 8.
2. Uninstalled p273, b266, and then the original FM 8.0.
3. So now I'm ready to start over.

Should I use the UAM for both b266 and then p273 and on the one system, it should work? Also, if the p273 exe does not work can I run the exe outside of the UAM and have it patch FM 8, b266?

I, like most Adobe users, don't really have a clue what UAM is doing in the background. Have you also seen different behavior with Vista SP1 vs XP SP2?

my framemaker image is on p266 already so we didn't have to deal with that patch.

We're not on Vista yet so we haven't tried that.

My test environment is on XP SP2 with english canadian

I had your issues with the downloaded patch.

When using UAM I had no problems.

What region language setting are you on?

I would perhaps start from scratch.. It's possible your framemaker is totally buggered at this point.

For me I'm testing using a virtual environment so I kept reverting snapshots back to the beginning till I figured out what worked.

I got the FM installation issues worked out under Windows Vista SP1.

Had two issues:
1. The Adobe PS driver didn't install.
2. FM 8 to 266 to finally 273 failed.

I actually didn't use the Adobe Update Manager to install the 273 (8-0-2) update, I used the Adobe FM download site. Wrong thing to do.
Here's the steps I took:

Uninstalled the patches: 273 followed by 266.
Uninstalled FM 8.0.

Then:
1. Rebooted, installed FM 8.0 and at the prompt installed the PDF upgrade (disk 2). I guess uninstalling FM 8 doesn't install this add-on and the installer identified the PDF prior installation and asked if I wanted to repair or remove it. Figuring there was no harm, I repaired it. Lo and behold the Adobe PS Printer device finally showed up on the Printers dialog box.

2. Clicked Help > Updates. It found FM 8.0.1 and I selected it and terminate FM 8 (it can't be running if you are trying to replace it).
3. b266 was installed correctly. Rebooted just to be sure.
4. Clicked Updates again and FM 8.02 (build 273) was recognized so I selected that. It took some time to install and it worked!
5. Worked!

Lesson? Don't download and run the updates available on the Adobe Support web site! Always trust the Adobe Update Manager!

thanks,
Ken

Download and install the 8.0.1 patch?
The patches do not seem to be cumulative; you need to install them in order. I'd reboot between installations, although the program doesn't require that.

I believe it would be wise to completely uninstall Frame and start over, making certain that the patches are installed in the proper order. I would also follow Art's suggestion and reboot after the reinstallation and after each update, launching Frame to make certain that all is well. This may not be required, except for peace of mind as you proceed.
