Frame 7.2 and InDesign CS3 Distiller conflict

I am using Frame 7.2b128, Distiller 7.0. I recently installed InDesign CS3, which uses Distiller 8.0.

Whenever I work in InDesign and create a final PDF, and then go back to working in Frame and generate a PDF by using Save As ..PDF (working in a book with all files open), I get "Internal Error 7204..."

In the past, the only way I could recover was to uninstall and reinstall Frame. Today even that won't work.

1. How can I generate a PDF in Frame? I get the same error when I use Print to file...

2. How can I configure my system to use either Distiller 7.0 or Distiller 8.0 all the time, and which should it be? Will this fix the problem?

I believe if you read the fine print in the installation instructions, it'll say that you can only have one version on your system.

I'm not familiar with the ID installation routine, but if you're installing from CS3, you're probably putting the complete version of Acrobat on your system, aren't you?

If so, you'll probably need to delete the earlier 7 distiller, and any associated logical printers. Then I'd reboot, and install the new version of Acrobat 8.

Cheers,
Art

Indesign CS3, all by itself, does not come with any version of Acrobat
or Distiller. This has nothing to do with Indesign.

Acrobat 8 Pro comes with most versions of Adobe Creative Suite 3. For
you to get Acrobat 8 installed, you would have had to buy either Acrobat
8 or one of the versions of the Creative Suite. Either way, you should
have uninstalled Acrobat 7 before installing Acrobat 8.

Uninstall both versions of Acrobat and reinstall one or the other, but
not both.

Just a quick addition: Frame 7.2 should work happily with Acrobat 8, so you can uninstall both distiller versions and then re-install 8.

I'm still dealing with this issue daily - have to reinstall Frame after I use InDesign. I only have Distiller 7. I was misinformed/misunderstood that InDesign CS3 automatically included Distiller 8.

Is the conflict with InDesign and Distiller 7? My in-house tech support says to buy Acrobat 8 in hopes it will fix the problem. Any other solutions?

Is there a solution that does not involve purchasing another Adobe product? After I create a PDF in InDesign, I cannot successfully create a PDF in Frame without reinstalling Frame! Is there a setting in Distiller 7 that can fix this, or???

Indesign's interaction with Distiller is no different from Frame's: From
either application you can print to the Adobe PDF printer instance. From
there, Acrobat takes over and the originating application (Frame or
Indesign) no longer plays a part in the PDF creation process.

Do you run into the same problem when you Export to PDF from Indesign?
Indesign's Export to PDF does not involve Distiller in any way.

Have you tried redirecting the Adobe PDF printer's output to File,
instead of to the Adobe PDF port (in the Ports tab of the Adobe PDF
printer instance)? This shouldn't change anything for you, except to
separate the two processes (printing and distilling). My guess is that
the error you're seeing is a problem with Distiller, not with Frame. But
if you're printing to the Adobe PDF port it's kind of hard to figure out
where things are going wrong. If you change the port to File, you can
print to a PS file from Frame, close Frame, and then distill the PS
file. Obviously any error you see at that point is not from Frame.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat 7?

I wouldn't bother buying Acrobat 8 just to fix this problem, although
uninstalling Acrobat 7 and reinstalling some version of Acrobat might
fix it. Plenty of people are running IDCS3, Frame 7.2, and Acrobat 7
without these problems (me being one of them).

For what it's worth, we use Frame 7.2 and Acrobat 8 and have no problems. We also use InDesign CS2, and no problems. We went straight from Acrobat 6 to Acrobat 8, so do not know if any problems with Acrobat 7. I do know that when we installed Acrobat 8, the installer stated that it is best to have only ONE version of Acrobat on your system, that Acrobat 8 can conflict with other versions of Acrobat. I have no idea whether this applied to version 7 also. If so, remove all older versions of Acrobat and keep just 7 on your system.

Furthermore, with Frame, I always Print to Adobe PDF as the printer, not save as PDF.

You can check whether Distiller 7 makes a functional postscript file from Frame by printing to file with Adobe PDF as the printer. Just check the Print to File checkbox in the Print dialog. If it does produce a postscript file, then distill that manually and see if you get a PDF. Let us know the results.

I've found that the InDesign CS3 process on my XP Home SP2 1GB RAM system doesn't quit promptly when I close it. (In the Windows Task Manager, the process often persists for several minutes.)

It may be possible that when you involve Distiller in your ID PDF processing, that the Distiller process is kept busy by ID to the point that it interferes with FM.

ID doesn't need Distiller to create PDF. If there's a compelling reason for you to print PostScript files from ID to Distiller, or a reason that prevents you from using File > Export > PDF in ID, then check in Task Manager that ID and Distiller processes are ended, or force them to end. This could preclude the need to reinstall FM.

Before purchasing Acrobat 8 as my tech support suggested, I tried one more thing - setting my PDF job options in InDesign to match the custom PDF job options settings that we use in Frame.

The Frame settings are stored here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings

I cannot find where the InDesign settings are stored, but while in ID, I configured the Export Adobe PDF settings to match my Frame settings, particularly for Compression and Output.

So far no 7204 error! Let's hope this does it!

For those of you who understand the internal workings, why would this make a difference and (hopefully) solve the problem?

It wouldn't. I don't know why you're getting this error, but it has
nothing to do with Indesign.

FWIW, it's easy to make new settings, but changing the existing presets
(either in Distiller or in Indesign's PDF Export) is quite difficult. I
doubt you really changed Indesign's PDF Export settings.

I gave you some good troubleshooting ideas in my last post in this
thread. Have you tried them? If you have, could you answer my questions?

You'd probably find Acrobat experts who know quite a bit more than I do
about your situation in the Acrobat forum.

m dulin,

If you want your PDF settings in InDesign and Frame to match, you can open Distiller, set your options, and specify a watch folder. A watch folder is an empty folder you have somewhere on your computer. You may have to create an empty In folder inside the watch folder. Then to make a PDF from whichever application, print to the Adobe PDF printer and select Save as File, choosing the In folder inside the watch folder as the place to store the ps file. Once the application is finished writing the Postscript file, Distiller takes over and creates the PDF and puts it and optionally the ps file into an Out folder inside the watch folder. If you create a ps from the other application before Distiller is finished with the first, Distiller will handle the second file when finished with the first.

With this workflow, there is no need to set the PDF options each time within each application. You set them once in Distiller and leave Distiller running all the time. Furthermore, Distiller is handling the PDF creation part and the apps are just creating Postscript files; they do not Distiller from Adam. Moreover, you need not create your Postscript files with Adobe PDF, you could also use any Postscript printer connected to your computer because you are saving the Postscript to file, not sending it to the printer.

If this also causes problems, then as suggested by others, you may be having a problem with Distiller.
