How do I save PDF settings for bookmarks and tags or edit the defaults so I don't have to select them every time I save a book or file as a PDF?

I think it’s stored in a .joboptions file IIRC…

Try Format > Document > PDF Setup from the Book window.

Thanks, Barb. This seems to work only for books and only my bookmark settings are saved. When saving a document as a PDF, neither tags or bookmarks settings are saved.

The PDF Settings are stored as document level properties, i.e. they are set for the document (or book) and FM remembers them.
To get the same PDF settings in new documents without manually setting them, you could import the Document Properties from another file that has the settings that you want. Note: this also imports other document level properties, so be certain that the document (or template) that you are importing from has ALL of the same settings that you need in your current document or book.

Thanks, Arnis. Only the bookmark settings are imported. The tag settings from the original document are not importing to the new document.

What version? My tags are saved after setting them via Format > Document > PDF Setup, closing the file and reopening. Book and file tested just fine. V 13.0.5.547.

It does save the settings for that document, but I want to save the settings to apply to all documents. Version 13.0.2.433. I'm still using the trial.

You should be able to upgrade the trial. Things change at Adobe without personal notes to me , but my students often attend classes on trial versions, and they can upgrade.
The original question was "how to save PDF settings for bookmarks and tags"—so saving is working for books and files? And now the question is how to import the bookmark/tag settings to the other chapters in a book?

I think I am current with the question, and you are correct, the tags are not importing with Document Settings enabled, or even all possible checkmarks in the entire dialog box enabled.
They are supposed to, so you can report this to Adobe here: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=newBug.

I just checked in FM2015 and the Tag settings are imported from the another file, but you need to have the same paratag names for this work correctly.

Arnis, I tested that with two files from one book, same ¶ tag names. I pulled out the existing accessibility tags first, thinking that was the issue (you couldn't tell they were coming in because they were already there), but the file I was importing to remained blank. It was strange.
That said, practically speaking, wouldn't this be handled at the book level? Set the book up once and all the files comply?

Barb,
The information stored at the book level and the document is separate. In general, FM's book settings do not permanently propagate to the component files, though you can make (some) changes to all files via the book.

Addendum: The tags are imported, but not always as expected (i.e. the process is a bit buggy). Here are some screen shots showing what happens.

Note that some items that were in the Include column stay there instead of getting moved into the Don't Include (i.e. Footer, Header).

I think those are the key words here. My setup was a little different—I scooted everything into the Don't Include list prior to importing, but that's where they stayed, after importing.
