I need to make some modifications to my Help file's sts file, but when I open it in Notepad it isn't readable. Any ideas how to resolve please?:
It sounds like you've moved too many levers at the same time.
The HTML holds the key...not the reference to the stylesheet, but the HTML (in the case of your headings) for the heading itself.
You've spent considerable time on this issue, but you may find that starting over with a new STS and default definitions will help you uniquely format your items, without the layers of CSS formatting that you've applied via default formatting and extra stylesheets, and HTML formatting that's worked its way
...What's the issue...that the topic doesn't display? Check what the bookmark is looking for and what the file name is. I'm betting there is an issue with odd/unexpected characters in the fm filename
It turns out you can't use brackets or dashes in the Headings. As soon as I removed it the topic displayed! You will both be very relieved to hear that the Help file now looks 100% how I want it. Thank you both so much for your patience with me and getting me to this very happy end point 🙂

Something like this in your HTML topic where the style isn't seeming to be applied:
That will tell you which CSS file is being used - or if there are multiple ones (like in this case) - in which case, the rules of CSS say that the last referenced CSS's definitions are the ones appplied. You may be messing around adjusting a CSS that isn't even being used in the HTML.

Thank you for clarifying. I came to the same conclusion that I wasn't modifying the 'master' .css, but didn't know where else to look.
I can see this in my version:

That's the only CSS that's being referenced in the topics? If so, then you need to either add (copy/paste) the contents of the rhstylemapping.css file you've been editing OR change the CSS that's being used in the FM Publishing Settings to point to rhstylemapping.css instead of layout.css.

Last week I mentioned that to edit the "base" css, you need to export the rhstylemapping.css.
Specifically,
"If you'd like to directly edit the CSS (which I like to do as well), there's no need to mess with the STS file...just use the Manage CSS option to Export and then after editing, use the corresponding Import option."
Have you done that yet?
One note: The h1 style may not exist in that CSS...you may have to type it in from scratch. See also the screen capture I shared earlier with my h1 definition from an existing project.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry!
I have now tried both approaches. In the latest attempt I used Matt's heading formats to define Headings 1, 2 & 3 in the rhystylemapping.css and imported that into the project. Re-imported only to have the same result. When I look at the source HTML it refers to a layout.css. I've opened that and pasted in the styles I want to use, but it still refuses to play ball.
I really am at a loss what to try/do next!

Once you know more about the mechanics, it should only take about 15 minutes to configure as you like.

Hi Matt, I agree. I don't think I can see the woods for the trees now!
Will try and dig out an unbutchered sts and start from the ground up tomorrow. Thanks for your time and patience

The new STS is the easy part...just select New in the screenshot below

If you look at where the layout.css file is located, you'll notice that it's in the Azure_Blue directory, which I'm sure is your output skin. That CSS only formats skin elements, not your content. Only modify it if you need to change how the Azure Blue skin appears.
Your content will be mostly formatted by
Other things can impact the formatting, but the odds are quite low, and the HTML would help you figure out if that is the case.

I took your advice and created a new project, it's now pretty much perfect:
Just the skin to change, but that's the easy bit 🙂
The one bit I need to fix is this - any ideas please before I leave you in peace?!!!
The content doesn't use any unusual styles, so once again, I'm a bit baffled.

Is that the only mis-behaving topic? Or are they all acting that way?
