I am using Framemaker 8.0 on a virtual Windows XP machine (running via VMWare on my Macbook).
The cover page of a document has three images: all .jpg format. When I convert the Framemaker book to a PDF, one of the images appears as a gray box each time. It is a different image each time, but never, ever, can I get all three images to appear properly. The images are imported by reference into three separate graphics frames that are positioned within a large anchored frame.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you!

Missing content (text or images) in a PDF is usually a symptom of needing the XP hotfix described here:
Adobe blog: Hotfix for FrameMaker
Be sure to follow the install instructions carefully to be sure that the hotfix has been correctly installed.
check Add or Remove programs in Control panel, click the “show updates” button, then scroll way down to see the hotfixes, to be sure that #952909 is shown.

And, after you get the hotfix in place, could you describe what you mean by "converting"
the file to PDF?
Most people would recommend that your system be set up with the Adobe PDF logical printer as the system default and that you Print to that device.
If you're using SaveAs PDF, try the recommended method....

I installed all the outstanding Windows updates, then installed the Hotfix and verified that it was installed. I set the printer to be Adobe PDF. The problem persists. Here is what I've tried:
1. Using Save as PDF - the largest photo is a gray box
2. Using Save Book As.. and selecting PDF - same result
3. Using Print to File - no postscript file was produced at all
4. Using Print with the PDF Printer selected - no file produced at all
When I save just the single Framemaker file with the images using Save as PDF, it looks perfect - all images are there. No other images are missing from the PDF files produced when I use that for the whole book. Only the one image on the cover is missing.
Other steps I tried:
I selected the graphics frame, and chose "Select all in frame" and deleted everything, then re-imported the graphic. Repeated all the steps above, no improvement in results.
I'm really, really stumped!

When you Print to the Adobe logial printer, in the Frame Print dialog box, are you unchecking Print To File?
It needs to be Unchecked, but Generate Acrobat Data should be activated.

In your original post, you said:
The images are imported by reference into three separate graphics frames that are positioned within a large anchored frame.
If this is indeed what you are doing, I am wondering if there are too many layers of frames. Try this:
Delete everything from the large anchored frame. Select the anchored frame, and import one graphic by reference. Move it to where you want it. Select the ANCHORED FRAME again, import the second graphic, and move it. Repeat for the third graphic. Now you should have ONE anchored frame with the three graphics inside it. There is no need (if it can be done) to have each graphic within its own frame and then those three frames inside the one anchored frame. You just need one frame with the three graphics inside it.
Regarding creating the PDF...when you print the Adobe PDF printer, a dialog should display asking you to name the PDF and specify where you want to store it. So, choose a convenient location that you can look in when the creation is finished. Also, this dialog box does NOT appear if you have checked the save to file box in the print dialog (if checked, the ps file is saved by default in the same location as your book or document file you are printing; unless, of course, you have changed it). Furthermore, if you click the Create Acrobat Data button, the save to file box is checked automatically. So, keep a sharp eye out as you are printing to Adobe PDF to make sure you can find the resulting files when finished.

One other question: what specific version of FM are you using, as shown in Help > About, the full "xx.xx.xx" numbers.

My FrameMaker version is 8.0p277.
The problem is ongoing, and now, after I save a Frame book as a PDF, I get this message: "Cannot quit." Not sure what that means, since I don't attempt to quit the program or the file, just tell it to make a PDF.
Thanks,Peggy
