A MIF wash is easily worth a try here. It clears out most kinds of corrupt structures.

MIF wash is a mouse click in later versions of FM. For FM8:

  1. Make backup copies of your .book and component .fm files.
  2. Open the the book & component files.
  3. Save each as MIF to .book.mif and .mif (instead of .fm).
  4. Close all files (I'd exit and re-start FM as well).
  5. Open all .mif files.
  6. Save as FM8 binary, replacing the original .book and .fm files.
  7. Try an update now.

The FM "binary" is just the .fm file that you normally save as.
