I keep getting an Internal error "Framemaker has dectected a serious problem and must quit." Can someone tell me what I need to do to correct this?

What version of FM & what are you doing at the time that’s throwing the error? Also, have you sent your error log into Adobe Tech Support?

No, I haven't sent this into Adobe Tech Support. I was trying to figure out how to do that when I got to this forum. Do you have any advice for me?
I have Framemaker 12 & when this happens I'm trying to "Update Book".

The error logs are created in a normally-hidden folder C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\12\ - send them to fmerror@adobe.com<mailto:fmerror@adobe.com>.
Make sure you’re all patched up in FM12 – you should be at 12.0.4.445. Does the error happen with all books or just one? Does the FM Console show any warnings or messages?

I get error messages about font not being available and about links failing to update but I don't think either of these should cause the "serious problem" Framemaker is detecting. We just subscribed to Framemaker less than one month ago. I wouldn't think I'd be behind on updates but when I tried to update I encountered another problem with Adobe Application Manager. I'm going to have an IT person at our company look into this. Hopefully, he'll have better luck than I'm having. If you have any helpful information to pass along, I'd still like to hear it. I will pass it along to our IT person. If not, thank you for your help. I appreciate it!

Oh, and I forgot to say, I've had this happen with more than one book.

Missing font messages should be fixable by having the Adobe PDF as your default printer with FM (use the free SetPrint plug in to set that); links failing to update should be fixed before trying to update – that’s an indication of locked or missing files.

OK, thank you. I'll work on those two things & see what our IT person can do about the program crashing.

When there is a file with missing fonts, then FrameMaker cannot open this file during the update.
Cross-references which point to this file cannot be resolved.
Therefore I would just open all files and then click on Update.
Maybe your unresolved links/cross-references are just caused by the missing fonts.

This has happened to me with several different files. The file crashes and when I open the files the pictures are grayed out. I have repeatedly worked with Adobe support and they have not been able to help. I now save the files as a new name and then back again as I work to eliminate the rework when Frame crashes.I am at the point where I am going to use something else due to the lack of reliability. Support has tweaked, re-installed twice. I have created new files and cut and paste the text into it and so on. I am not doing anything fancy - just typing, inserting (not linking) pictures, working locally.

Are you getting any Missing Fonts messages? Any locked files? What version of FM? Is it up to date? Have you MIF-washed your files? Where are you maintaining your files – local or on a network?

Framemaker 10 and it is new. I just started using it and now have re-installed 4 times, twice by Adobe support. I work locally and do nothing out of the ordinary. I maintain everything locally. I do not link to a network. I use few of the bells and whistles. It used to happen infrequently and now occurs daily with multiple files. I get a locked file which you cannot open because Frame doesn't interpret it as a Frame file. I also get one with an A5E error. I can remove the A5E error extension to open the file and recover the text but the images are grayed out and not recoverable. I have no missing fonts. What is MIF-washing? These are new files since I just started using Frame recently. I used it years ago when it was Macromedia. Was happy to use it again but now rethinking this because of the rework and unreliability.

FM10 is now quite old – current version is FM2015 (aka FM13). There were a lot of sequential fixes done to FM10 – what point version are you at? Do you have the SetPrint utility installed to keep the Adobe PDF printer instance as your default Windows printer inside FM? Are you a local admin on your machine? What o/s are you running? MIF-washing is the process of saving FM files as .mif and then reopening them as .fm files – cleans out a lot of cruft in them. Where did these files’ content come from – upgraded versions of FM or from other source like Word (always trouble)?

My bad - It is actually Frame 13.0.1385. I run it as the admin. The files are new. I'll try the MIF whatever. I will try anything at this point because considering going back to Power Point.

How are you "inserting" your images. The grey image is what happens when FM trips up over an image imported by copy or pasted or an OLE linked image. The recommended route is to import graphics by reference.
If you strip out the greyed-out graphics from your files, is FM then stable?

I do embed them. The text is stable always. It's just the images that are grayed out. Is it common practice to link instead of embed? I embedded them just because of the extra care you have not to move or rename the linked graphics.

Renaming and moving graphics files after the fact isn't normally part of a mature workflow. There are more advantages in using graphics imported by reference (i.e. linked) than are in embedding them. Leaner FM files, the ability to update and share between publicatons, being able to track/manage the referenced graphics files (List of References) are reason enough. Embedding a graphic loses all links to the source so if you need to update - then you need to find its name; it bloats the FM file; they can go bump in the night and you end up with a grey rectangle [as you have experienced].
