I'm experienced with FrameMaker 8, but just starting to get used to FrameMaker 9. A keyboard shortcut I use constantly in FrameMaker 8 is Ctrl-9, type the first letter of the paragraph tag and hit Enter. If there is more than one tag starting with the same letter, I just keep hitting that letter until the tag I want appears. For example if there's a Heading1 and a Heading2, I type 'h' two times to get Heading2. With FrameMaker 9, it seems that I have to type the whole word 'Heading2' before hitting Enter.
Frustrating when favorite shortcuts are messed up. Is there any way to get my old shortcut back? Is there a fast way to apply paragraph tags in FrameMaker 9?

Type Down Arrow after selecting the first of similar format names. For example, Ctrl+9 H DnArrow moves to Heading2, or whatever is the second format that begins with "H".
Consider using format names that have fewer identical leading characters. For example:
1H Heading1
2H Heading2
1N Numbered1
N Numbered
Typing 1 brings up 1H Heading1; DnArrow moves to 1N Numbered1.
Some folks separate the abbreviation from the full name with an underscore instead of a space; i. e., 1H_Heading1, instead of 1H Heading1.
HTH

Peter

What happened the the ability to type the first few letters to get the desired format? For example, I used to be able to type "H1" or "H2" or "H3" to get to those para tags. Now I have to type H a bunch of times (that works for me, unlike for the original questioner) or use the down arrow, both of which slow me down. Yes I could rename all my styles so that each one starts with a different letter or number, but it would be nice to just have it work the way it used to.
IOW, I seem to be having the opposite problem from the original. I *can't* type the name of the actual para tag. If I type "H1", I land on the first tag that starts with H, then on the tag that starts with 1, if any. (Or I get an error beep if there isn't one.)

Barbara,
Which version and point release of FM are you using? In the various catalog list shortcuts, the type-ahead does work as Peter indicates. In other drop down lists, within designers for example, only the first letter does a match.

Why couldn't FM work consistently in all cases -- to make it easier for us users. The old way FrameMaker version 8 method of repeatedly typing the first letter of the paragraph tag works fastest and most efficiently for me.

It's the new & imporved interface...
The engineeering team have gotten an earful on this issue, but there appear to be issues in the OWL interface implementations that limits how this feature can work. I certainly hope that future releases will be more stable and bring back the old compatibilities.

Hi,
since FM ? it works F9 to apply or to change a paragraph tag.
Sample: If there is "SideHead" what you want and currently your cursor is in a paragraph tag "Body",
then press F9 + S + Return and the paragraph tag "SideHead" is applied.
Note:
There is a long history of shortcuts in FrameMaker, beginning un UNIX systems and then for Mac and at least on Windows.
The growing of features and the compatibility are great challenges for the developer of FrameMaker.
Indeed, some could be better, but there are many great and many shortcuts in FrameMaker.
