Need to purchase v7.2

New Here ,
Mar 04, 2008 Mar 04, 2008
I have a new client who is moving their documentation from Word to FrameMaker. The last thing I want them to go through is dealing with the several fairly serious bugs being reported about v8.0. Is there a way to still purchase copies of v7.2?
Thanks, Monica

Monica,

Exactly which "serious bugs" are your concern? I've been using FM8
since the beta and find that with the latest patches it's every bit as
productive as earlier versions.

Monica...

There's a copy for sale on eBay right now...new and sealed, according to the seller. Buyer beware, of course.

Search on eBay item no. 190202133680

It is my belief that we fixed all the showstopper issues with FrameMaker 8 through patch 8.0.2 (p273). If you are aware of any other showstopper issues, please feel free to send me an e-mail at vivekj@adobe.com.

Vivek,

I do not agree.

There is a very serious bug in FM8 p273 with regard to opening MIF files that results in missing glyphs.

I have been in contact with several translation vendors in Scandinavia that report the same problem, using different workflows and different tools.

See separate entry: "Missing characters when opening MIF8 in FM8 (p273)"

Arnis and Vivek make very good points, i.e., it's important to be specific. Meaning it's time to jump in the water and start swimming (get the upgrade and work with it already!). Will do, and will clarify if needed.

Monica,

If you work with translations, pls see my previous post. If not, I'm sure you will have no problems at all.

I agree with the issues of instability with FM8. I have had versions of FM since 5 and never encountered the instability problems I have had with FM8. As an example: with a newly reformatted computer and just office 2007 and InDesign CS3 and FM 8 (with patches) installed, changing the font of a document and saving as pdf frequently causes crashes. One can delete out fontcache.dat and reboot and resave, and it will fix this. But that gets old. The issue of "corrupted fonts" seems a poor excuse for microsoft and adobe fonts in their most recent release. InDesign CS3 doesn't have these problems, but then again, it is no replacement for FM for long documents.

I think FM8 is a work in progress. As an example, see how the paragraph style menu has nothing for open type features. Maybe FM 9...
