Hello,
we are working with structured FM 8 and do translate in pretty much all languages except for Arabic. So far, there were no complaints for the Asian languages. But now, we receive the feedback that the characters for Thai (Arial Unicode) are correct but that there are spaces between some characters making it difficult to read the text. We have done various tests and recognized that all True-Type fonts are causing these problems. Now, I installed an OTF-Font for Thai and the problems stay the same. Therefor, my question if the Thai font is upported at all?
Thank you very much in advance,
Sandra Ullrich

Is there someone working with FrameMaker 8 as well who experienced similar problems with Thai or other Asian translations?
All remarks are highly appreciated.

Hi Sandra U.,
as soon as you have the »Support for complex scripts« activated, your Windows will install additional fonts from the original CDs (have them at hand). You'll find this option at the control panel »Regional and Language options« on the »Language« tab. [Exact wording may differ, I have the German UI.]
Apart from Tahoma (that you already have installed, which supports Thai) some other fonts with Thai support are installed, like Angsana, Browalia, Cordia...
Kindest regards,
- Michael Müller-Hillebrand

Sandra,
I am definitely having problems with Thai in FM8. Did the advice that Michael Müller-Hillebrand gave you work for you? I have no problems with other Asian fonts, just Thai.
Thanks!

Beri,
Which font are you using or have you tried with Thai?

BrowalliaUPC, BrowalliaNew, AngsanaUPC, AngsanaNew. The FM7 book was done in BrowalliaUPC.

Beri,
I would like to reproduce your problem (I have FM7/8/9 to test with). It would be great if you could share a working FM7 document with a PDF created from that document showing how it was supposed to look like. I understand you cannot create an excerpt of such a document because you don't have FM7, but maybe there is a document without any company secrets showing the issue. My private mail is info at cap-studio dot de.

Michael,
I'd be very grateful for any light you can shed on this. I am attaching some pages excerpted from a PDF generated from the FM7 book, and an FM file of the main body of the book. This manual has been released so there is not a confidentiality issue.
I should note that I do not use Structured Frame. Is that a problem? And I have yet to try Art Campbell's suggestion (attached below).

FROM ART CAMPBELL (FrameMaker General Discussion)
Without having used Thai fonts, I think:
When you moved to FM 8, you also moved to a Unicode environment; the documents you created in 7 were not Unicode, so the manner in which you insert characters probably changed. I recall seeing other problems with people who had to switch environments, but I'm unsure if there's an easy solution.
Based on Microsoft's www site for BrowalliaUPC, it also looks as if there are two versions of the font in the field, and they seem to have different levels of Unicode support. If you're using the 2.2 version of the font, you may want to get the version 5 shipped with Vista and 7 to get the expanded support.
To see if there's also something going on with the operating system / environment, I'd suggest creating a new FM 8 fle and seeing if you can insert content with the Thai font... or if that's also twisted.

Michael, don't know whether the CC email address I added is what you meant. If not, I apologize. I'm attaching the FM7 files again, with the PDF created from them, in hope you can find an answer to this problem! Thank you for your help!

Beri, Apparently the forum software does not pass on attachments and
via CC nothing reached me with the above subject. Just send the files
via direct mail to info "at" cap-studio "dot" de.

I saw this, too, and edited the post accordingly, please visit the
post at the Adobe web site. Also my mails from September 26 & 27
contain my email.
When you mentioned having attached the files I thought you were using
the forum in the web and so nothing to download, but apparently you
were answering via email. If you visit
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2291909#2291909
you may upload the files as well.
