Page Numbering Issues

New Here ,
Feb 26, 2008 Feb 26, 2008
I have a book file with 8 files, Section 1 thru 8.
Sections 2 through 8 have their page number setup for
"continue numbering from previous file".
However, in each section, the <$lastpagenum> variable
is only counting the pages in its file.

I am getting page numbering like this:

Page "3 of 3", "4 of 4" instead of "3 of 8"

Anyone else have this problem; is there a way to fix this?

April...

It's not clear to me what you are trying to achieve. Say, for example, that each file in the book has 10 pages and that each file is a "section" in the book. What should the numbering be for the first page in, say, the third section? 1 of 10, 21 of 30, or 21 of 80?

April,

Yes, that's the way it's supposed to work.

If you're trying to get the total for the book, so you can say 4 of 66... on the last page of the book, create a unique paragraph tag. If you want, you could set up a special text frame for it, but you can also include it in the regular text flow. Set the font to white, so it disappears.

Then, in the component files, replace the <$lastpagenum> variable with a cross reference to the unique tag, and specify the "page" cross ref format.

Cheers,
Art

April:

Art's suggestion is the one I've learned to use.

FrameMaker books that contain multiple chapter files don't "know about" the total number of pages in the book. So FrameMaker must be "tricked" to produce the effect you're looking for...

Cheers & hope this helps,
Riley
