Hi everyone! Recently, workig on a large manual I have encountered a problem with the page numbering in Framemaker. I am attaching example screenshots and link to file below.
Scenario: I have a book with childbooks inside, childbooks contain .fm files such as TOC and Chapter. I want my TOC to start with page 0, but each other chapter start with page 1 everytime. I have set numbering for the .fm files separately to start with desired pages, and then set numbering properties in a childbook to "read from file". The problem is when I update the parent (main) book, the page numbering resets to 1 for TOC and continues 2, 3, 4... in other chapters.
The intended result:
The PROBLEM:
I would appreciate any help regarding the matter, thank you in advance.
Example file (I cannot share the actual project due to confidentiality): EXAMPLE RAR FILE

What version of FM? What are the numbering properties of the master book?

FM version 17.0.3.
I cannot change the numbering properties of the masterbook. (It's always "greyed out" on right click mouse)

Think you're behind a patch there. Anyway, you have to select the first document or book in the master to see the numbering properties.

To reiterate what Jeff suggested, choose each chapter file individually, then right-click to choose numbering.
Once you've got your child files set properly, update the book (regardless of inconsistent numbering messages if the appear) and then save all files. You should be all set.

Thank you for your reply. I do each file and childbook separately and it seems to work up until I update the masterbook. Once updated, page numbering sets to the one I have shown in pictures. Or, when I do publish the document the final PDF file page numbering becomes 1,2,3,4... (continues from previous chapter) etc. I attached a pdf file which demonstrates the issue (step-by-step) below:

Think I see your problem - update the the child books - they should be set fine. Then when you update the master book, don't select "Update Numbering" - there's no need at that point because you want to preserve your child number schema.

I tried to do as you suggested. When publishing the output is again "faulty" and set to different page numbers.
(I do the same kind of numbering in other manuals where I have only 1 masterbook with several chapters (as .fm files) and it works fine. But working with a book within a book seems problematic T_T)

I use a massive "book of books" structure for one of my projects, but since I only create PDFs of the child books, I never really paid any attention to page numbering at the master book level. Will you be creating a master TOC that makes references to the child book contents? If so, would you want it to point to this whacky child book numbering schema anyways?

You wrote that the numbering and pagination properties are greyed out. These properties are not properties of the book, but properties of the single files in the book. You have to select the files instead of the book. Then you can select these menu items.
