pdf text flow does not match Framemaker 2020 text flow

In Framemaker 2020 (Unstructured), I am using the publish feature to convert the book (comprised of 15 chapters) to pdf. When it is converted to pdf, the pdf text flow does not match the framemaker text flow on random pages. In Framemaker a particular page will appear full of text in the template (no room for additional text). In pdf, it will bring up a line from the next page. On other pages that appear full in Frame, the text flow matches the pdf exactly. As it appears to happen randomly, it has a ripple effect on pages throughout that particular chapter. I also tried using the save to pdf feature, with the same result.

Is there a setting I am missing somewhere to keep this from happening?

What is your default printer? Can you change it to Adobe PDF? This is the printer which FrameMaker wants to use to create its PDF.

Do you see any font substitutions in the FrameMaker Console window when you make the PDF? Choose View > Panels > Console to display the Console window before making the PDF.

It says "Times" Font is not available. "Times New Roman" will be used in this session. When I used Search Character Format and set it to Times, there are no characters with the "Times" Font in the document.

I went in to Preferences and deselected Remember missing fonts, restarted Frame and no longer see any missing fonts in Console. Same result when i pdf the file of mismatched text flow.

Hi,

Dies this mean that your issue is solved? Or is the PDF still different from your FrameMaker file!

Do you notice this only for a single file? Or for all files which you process?

I had this issue once about a year ago. As far as I remember it went away, when I did a MIF wash (save as MIF and then resave as FM) and imported all formats again into the file.

There is an option which controls the display: DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics

Check Klaus Daube's excellent documentation:

https://daube.ch/docu/fmaker65.html

But I doubt that this is your issue.

Best regards, Winfried

Winfried, I did the MIF wash, and imported the formats back into the file. I found why a line was being brought up onto a previous page.  In framemaker, a particular paragraph (Justified) has a single word on the last line of the paragraph. But when i pdf it that single word is moved up to the previous line, which then brings text from the next page onto this page, and that ripples across numerous pages.

How I see it in frame (aliqua is an orphan on the last line).

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore aliqua.

How I see it in pdf (aliqua is squeezed into the last line and not orphaned--I took some liberties with my Latin to show you an example!)

Lorem ipsum dolor amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore aliqua.

Winfried you're awesome.  I always use the Publish feature.  I also had the problem when I went Save As pdf. But just now as I chose File > Print and chose adobe pdf, the paragraph in question immediately rejustified itself while I was looking at it and put the orphaned word back up with the rest of the paragraph.  I opened the pdf and it all appears to match the framemaker flow. I went back and did File > Print and chose my printer, and i watched the justification change back to the problem I was having before leaving an orphaned word on the line. So I'm changing the File Print setting to adobe pdf and leaving it. Thank you!

Very good that this works now! I think that you can also use the Publish feature (or Save As PDF, there is no difference) as long as you have set Adobe PDF as your printer.

Have a good day!

Best regards, Winfried
