ramjilluuuuuuuuu,

This is not a simple process and there is no single step-by-step process to get it done. Furthermore, there could be many steps involved, more than you could expect a forum contributer to explain here.

This forum is designed for focused questions about specific problems, not tutorials on product usage for beginners. Given the level of complexity that you are addressing here, I would suggest that you spend some time learning and experimenting, then return here if you have questions with a more narrow scope.

All that, of course, is my humble opinion. Perhaps you'll get a volume of XML instruction after me from someone else.

Ramjilu,

As Russ said, it is complex process, primarily because a PDF does not contain any internal XML markup (at least not to my knowledge). You can export the text from a PDF, you can export the images from a PDF, and you can even export the PDF as a Word document (with varying results). But none of these formats contain XML markup. So, once you get the content out as text, images, etc, you will need to mark it up with the DocBook elements. I cannot see how this could be automated. Recall that PDF is a "print" format, which is independent of the application that created it. Thus, there are no specific steps for doing the markup.

Technical note: Acrobat X does have an XML Save As option and does a surprisingly reasonable job with the mark-up. If the PDF is tagged in the first place, it is even more usable.

However, going from the exported XML format to a DocBookstructured mark-up will take a substantial amount of work and XSLT programming.
