Why are some table headings disappearing when I pdf a Frame 8 file? There is no pattern in the disappearances and each time I pdf the file, a different cell heading disappears. If I create a text box and paste that box over the heading, it shows up fine in the pdf, but that's a dumb way to work. This all started happening in the last month, after I changed computers. Thanks for the help!!

Thanks for the hotfix tip. I tried it but the problem is still there. Yes, it is always in the shaded heading cells where the text randomly disappears. I checked back in the older documents from before I changed computers, and the problem was there as well, just not as noticeable as it is now. No footnotes involved.
So please check if you create Tagged PDF (PDF Setup, third tab) and if you do turn this feature off.

Sounds like you need the Microsoft Hotifx:

Here's an Adobe blog link that talks about the Hotfix.

TekWrtr,
It might be connected to the Hotfix, but it might as well be an issue still present in FrameMaker 9:
Is your heading cell shaded? You might find the text is present in the PDF but hidden behind the shading.
This appears sometimes if a footnote is present in one of the heading cells. Or, if you create a Tagged PDF and the Cell paragraph format is in the list of Tag formats.

Well, new problem related to this. When I uncheck the "Generate Tagged PDF" tab, the pdf often doesn't generate at all, particularly when there is a TOC in the book. Help!

Are you getting error messages from the Distiller stage (yes it's there even when you Save As PDF)? What is your system default printer? Have you tried printing directly to the AdobePDF printer instance via the File > Print route? Can you create a PDF (by whatever route) of just the problematic TOC by itself?

This is the message I get right now when I save to pdf. If I print to a prn, it doesn't open at all. I used to have a tool that converted the prn automatically at my old job, but there's nothing on the new job's computer and no IT help available. I've been doing a workaround by printing the TOC and the document separately and just adding the TOC to the new pdf, but now when I'm trying to pdf a large document (without TOC) that used to pdf just fine (with TOC), I'm getting the following message. I've just pdf'd chapters 7 & 8 with no problem whatsoever.

You are likely using the initial release of FrameMaker 8.0, where there was bug in the PS output. It was fixed in 8.0.1.
You can apply the patch by selecting Help > Updates.

Further to what Shlomo mentioned, it also sounds like you don't have things configured properly for your printer instance. With FM, you really should have the AdobePDF printer instance set as your default (i.e. you shouldn't ever get "prn" file with this). You might want to consider installing Sundorne's SetPrint utility (available at http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm ) which automatically set's your default printer to the AdobePDF for your FM session and then back again when you finish.
