> The main concern for some, will be the lack of NNTP support.
Yup, which means that I'll be leaving the forums.
Not that I've been that active for the past year, but anyway...
It's been nice talking to you all!

I'm here? Where's everybody else?
So far so good. Nothing broken and most everything has migrated across properly that I can see.
If there's anythig missing, let me know.

This is a test reply, to see who it thinks I am when I reply. So far it looks like I'm a screen name, not a name... oh oh.
edit: aha, got it changed, all in two shakes of a Web 2.0 lamb's tail, too.

AG: " It's a good example of Darwinism in action - you learn to adapt or fade away."
NGN: "Darwinism imposed from without is the severest form of tyranny" <vbg>
I suppose I can adapt to the fussy presentation/layout, but the biggest question - to be answered as soon as I click [Post Message] - is, will I get my name back? "I am not a screen name, I am a free man!"

Well.... yabbut.... Niels, it looks like you didn't get your name hooked up with your previous profile, because you don't have the "643 postings since the dawn of time" blurb under your generic picture. End result is that we can't then look up the "Collected Writings of NGN"
Unfortunately I haven't a clue on how that part of things works, but maybe there are some instructions in the "forum usage" section, here:

Thanks again, Sheila ... I found a posting that suggested a second link for editing profiles, and may (or may not) have managed to replace the screen name with my real name. Whether this rebuilds the link with the accumulated wisdom <rofl> of my earlier postings remains to be seen.

"Is this not wondrous strange ..." I had a useful chat session with an Adobe support person this morning, who managed to discover the user-ID associated with an earlier corporate e-mail address. If I log in with that ID, I miraculously recover my history from 2005 to date ... even though clicking on the avatar blandly informs me I've been a member since this morning.
I'll go with the flow.

Arnis,
If you'd also pass along the following complaint about the new forum (I'm sure someone will eventually leave a compliment ;- ) 😞
The old forum had an option to send emails to an address other than the one linked to your profile, which is a GREAT THING for those of us who segregate their email. It's a really valuable option that isn't available here -- you have to use your "private" Adobe address rather than an alternate.
Which means that someone who wants to participate and manage their email as before needs two profiles, which probably isn't what Adobe wants to end up with.
Cheers,
Art

Art,
That's a known request that has been brought up in a number of places. I too would like for that to happen. I have a couple of older Adobe ID's that aren't email addresses and can't change the email associated with that without losing the ID entirely. This was a really bad decision by someone a number of years ago and we're all living with the unintended consequences.

Hi, I found two problems I´d like to point out:
* The new forum loads VERY slow on our Internet computer (no direct connection to hosts allowed for security). Adobe sites were allways slow, but with the new forum it got even worse. The page is displayed after 20 Seconds and a minute later I can click the links.
* There should be a "Search this forum" button. The way I saw it, I have to use the general search and then in the results narrow it down to e.g. the FrameMaker forum which is quite annoying. Or did I overlook something?

Agreed on the slowness, although not quite to the extreme you're seeing.
There's a "forum discussion forum" where you might get some tips or ask your question regarding the Search feature:

Robert,
You could try using the RSS feeds to subscribe to the Forums. I'm using Feedreader to stay on top of things and it's quite fast. Also, since Feedreader has a built-in browser I can also do a quick reply, though the RIA editor is a bit quirky through the apps browser interface.
Regarding the Search flakiness, it's a well known and shouted about foible. A quick tip is to click in the Search Forums entry, hit the space bar to blank and then hit the search button. It will then let you get the "More options" button below, to let you pick the specific Forum that you want to confine your search to. Very awkward and bass ackwards!

Hello Arnis
I've posted on the Acrobat forum regarding the apparent lack of (or my inability to find) the previous email digest subsricption option. There are references to email subscriptions, but it looks as though this option means you get all postings as individual emails, and that is the last thing I want. Any ideas on whether this option is still available and how to set it up would be welcome.
thanks

There's a FAQ that explains how to manage the subscribe feature, here:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/416417?tstart=0
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/416459?tstart=0
Actually, there are several FAQs talking about the subsciption feature, not sure why they're separate questions, but in any event there are multiple entries to check out.
The FAQ:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/forum_comments/faq
and lots of hidden gems in the forum discussion section [be sure to put on some zen calm music before reading this forum, you'll need it]

oh, and one other thing about the e-mail subscription preferences FAQ I mentioned above. Many people seem to think this preference change isn't working correctly, but
I think that changing your preference as per this FAQ:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/416459?tstart=0
only changes it for all threads that are created AFTER you change your preference -- so in other words, because this "Uh oh" thread was started BEFORE i changed my preference setting, I still get e-mails of this thread, but I don't get mails of threads started after I changed my preference setting.

Thanks for the links Sheila
I've looked through a host of posts complaining about the new forums and the lack of NNTP support. I don't pretend to understand what NNTP is, and I have (to my knowledge) never used a newsreader. What the previous forums had was an option to receive posts from each forum of interest as a daily digest, in which new postings were listed in order for each thread. 1 email per day per forum, easy to read and easy to archive. It is this specific option that I'm interested in, but I can't find any recognisable reference to it in any of the postings, and no obvious way of getting the new system to do it. There probably is a way that I haven't found - I find these forums counter-intuitive. I've been subscribing for many years, and although I don't post regularly (not expert enough to answer questions) I have gained a lot of knowledge simply by reading the posts. However, I can't be bothered learning how to mess about with my email system to get something usable, and I certainly don't want dozens of emails flooding in every day. I guess if the previous option isn't available I'll only visit the online forum when I have a specific question, and hope that there are still enough experts around to answer it (judging from the comments from the NNTP crowd, that may not be the case.
Thanks again for your help
Graeme

Graeme,
Right now, email digests aren't an option in this system, but Adode is acutely aware of this, along with a number of other issues about the email handling, and is working with Jive to get things fixed. How long this may take is not known, as it appears that some of the issues may be at the code level, rather than the templates that users (Adobe) can customize.
An alternate means of keeping track of things is to use the RSS feeds with a standalone reader like Feedreader or Feedburner. Just subscribe to the forums that you want (I'd recommend using the All contents link from the list of choices in each forum). One nice aspect of this that you can reply directly to posts using the built-in browsers in these products.

Thanks Arnis
At least I now know where things stand, and I guess I'll wait a while and see what transpires. Presumably there will be a post somewhere if digests get resurrected?
