My company is experiencing the same problem, intermittently, when converting from Frame 7.2 to Frame 8. However, when Frame throws the unavailable Arial Black font error message (and we do have Arial Black installed), it says it is substituting Arial Black Heavy, which we do NOT have. Has anyone seen this wrinkle?

Is it possible that somewhere there is a bold (or even a bolded) attribute applied with the Arial Black? AFAIK, Arial Black doesn't have a bold, so moving up to the Heavy family member would be the logical step for FM to try, depending upon your maker.ini settings in the [Fonts] section.

Possibly. This book has had many hands dipping into it. I'll check this
out. Thanks for the tip!

I ran into a similar (maddening) problem yesterday and benefited from a simple solution provided by a colleague. If you've installed Windows XP SP3, that's likely the cause of the Arial Balck problem. Windows XP SP3 includes an update to Arial Black font that our Framemaker template does not like. It changes all Arial Black Bold to Arial Black Heavy. This may the case for your templates, too.
If you install SP3, restore the Arial font before opening a Framemaker document.
Try this. It worked for me:

There is an MS Hotfix for the font issue, as listed in this earlier thread:
