The Undo command and Redo command are not working in the FrameMaker 10 book I am working on.
I am running FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7. I'm working on a Structured DITA FM document.
Undo works in my other FM books.
How do I turn it back on?
Thank you
Jenn
You say Undo works in other books -- are they also DITA documents?
We recently noticed an Undo problem with DITA when using the DITA-FMx plugin, but it occurs only when you edit tags in Document View. If you edit them in Structure View, the Undo history works fine. (The DITA-FMx people were notified yesterday, and they are working on this.)
I mention this in case it's relevant to your issue.

Jenn,
What exactly are you trying to do? Not all operations are undoable. Especially operations performed by plug-ins are usually not undoable.

I am editing a FM10 Structured book. I am doing the usual things like typing text, copying and pasting text, adding elements, etc.
I have not installed any plug-ins.
thanks.

Jenn,
If you click on Edit > History, do you get a window showing anything?

History window is empty.
When I leave the History window open, and type in the FM document, I can see the word "Typing" appear briefly in the history window, then disappear. Same behaviour for deleting, etc.

Are you using any clients/pugins? This is a fairly standard issue with Frame clients (if they haven't been coded to allow Undo)

Don't know if there was ever a resolution to this issue. We were seeing the same problems described in Jenn's original post with the same configuration (FM 10 on Windows 7, working with structured documents). However, the problem did not appear on all systems where we had FM installed.
What fixed it (at least for now) was changing the selected workspace. I'm not sure if there was something corrupt in our workspace settings or a bug somewhere in FM's workspace functionality, but the undo/redo history returned when we selected a different workspace.

Hi Steve,
I'm still experiencing this issue. So am very excited to hear there may be
a workaround!
What do you mean by "changing the selected workspace"? What is a workspace
and how do you change it?
Thanks,
Jenn

Hi Jenn,
Workspaces are basically saved configurations of all of FM's pods and panels. You can access the default workspaces from what Adobe calls the "workspace switcher," which is a drop-down menu located in the upper right corner of the application window (next to the minimize/maximize/close buttons).
I checked with 4 other writers who are all using FM 10 in our office - all with the same installation and configuration - and 2 of us were having the same issues you were with undo/redo. It almost looked like FM was clearing the history as soon as you did anything at all, making it impossible to undo your actions. Clicking the workspace switcher and selecting a different workspace returned the undo functionality. In my case, I was using a custom workspace and then selected one of the defaults. In another case, the writer simply switched from one default workspace ("Structured Authoring") to another ("Authoring").
I don't know what the workspace setting has to do with undo/redo, but there's something buggy there. I guess I ought to file a bug with Adobe, except the problem seems to be intermittent. At least I haven't been able to reproduce it here.

Hi Steve,
I tried you suggestion with FM9 - changed from my own workspace to "Structured Authoring" and suddenly the back button is working again/ histroy is not deleted right away.
Not really what I want, but at least I know how to get the back button working again.
Many thanks to you.
Does anyone know, if there will be a fix for FM9 as well?
Or is this not supported anymore and I need to upgrade to FM10 to get a final fix for this issue?
Regards,
Anna

This problem came back for me, after I thought I had a reliable workaround. I've filed a bug with Adobe.

Here's the very prompt response I got from Adobe on the issue after I logged a bug. Hope it helps anyone else who is seeing this behavior:
Thanks for raising the issue with us. We investigated the issue and think the reason for the same is presence of DITA X-Ref dialog. If DITA-XRef dialog is open, the history is getting cleared. We will investigate the issue and take it for fixing.
Till that time, please do the following:
1. Goto File --> Preferences --> Interface.
2. Make sure "Hide Panels on Close" is OFF.
3. Close the DITA-XRef dialog when not needed.
