Using the Publish feature in FM 2015 Crashes the app

I was using the publish to APS feature in FM 2015 and it seems to be fine with small books (<10 files) or a small chapter file<10 pages. I have set the paragraph format Heading2 to break up the chapter into smaller chunks, but now FM just crashes continually. I tried other output options and all of them now crash FM. I liked publishing to APS because it generated a nice individual HTML file. FM is getting too frustrating to use as an authoring tool. Nothing seems to work as advertised except basic functionality.

Hi Laura,

Sorry to hear about your experience with Authoring in FrameMaker. This is something unusual and needs investigation.

Crashes are ugly and can hamper productivity in the absence of any workaround.

We might need more help form you in order to replicate the problem and fix it immediately.

My colleagues from our support team will get in touch with you to analyze the issue and provide a workaround or resolution for the same.

I think this is somehow related to Acrobat  Distiller. I generated HTML through APS and then had to switch gears to work on another project. I use the print to book feature to generate PDFs so flipped the printer settings to Adobe PDF.  After that, I noticed that when I tried to publish through APS, Acrobat Distiller launched and crashed FM.

On my Windows 10 laptop, I switched the printer to a local physical printer and it published through APS but only generated an "article" file.

On my Windows 7 VM, I reinstalled FM, updated with patch 2 (fine) but patch 3 required updating to AAM 10 and renaming OOBE file. Even after this effort, publishing to APS crashes FM.

RoboHelp is no better - it crashes every time I try to import FM files.

Found the issue - you have to run the HTML Setup Utility before publishing to an output. I thought that once you had run the utility, the info was retained by FM. Apparently, that's not the case - if I run or at least open the HTML Setup Utility, things run smoothly on both Windows 7 and Windows 10. However, FM should throw an error message if you haven't used the HTML Utility or put something in the log files that paragraph formats are not mapped and a valid file could not be generated.
