Video clips do not play in PDF document, why?

What is the point of being able to import video clips (SWF, AVI, WMV, OLE object, etc) into FrameMaker 8 if you can not run them in the PDF? I still have to manually embed the clips in Acrobat. Am I missing something here or is this only function for FrameMaker to keep the placeholder for the clip when you have to insert it after the PDF is created?

Shaun,

How are you importing the video clips into FM? Are you using Shlomo
Perets TimesSavers tool for this?

Which version of FrameMaker are you using? In FrameMaker 8, you can embed SWF and the SWF plays in PDF.

I simply click file>import (the swf file) into a FrameMaker 8 document and then choose the DPI I want. Under preferences I made sure that the "Do not embed Adobe Flash files in PDF" was NOT checked. Something strange though. When I choose "Copy into Document" while choosing the file it will not even play the video in FrameMaker. When I choose "Import by Reference" when choosing the SWF file, it will play in a pop-up window when I double click it. Regardless, neither one of the two ways will play in the PDF. It only shows the first frame.

Any Ideas?

Do you have the patches installed FrameMaker 8.0.1 (p266) and 8.0.2 (p273)?

Unfortunately, I just installed the software three weeks ago so it was already 8.0.2. Do you think that there might be something wrong with how I encode the video or is there a configuration problem? I cant believe that I am the only one that can not get this to work. Is there someone at Adobe that I can contact? Maybe next time I am invited to their post expo party I will bring it up!

I found the problem with the software. You can not use Acrobat Professional 7.0 with FrameMaker 8.0 or you will not be able to properly Distil the PDF and the video will only be an image of the first frame. You are not able to install the Distiller 8.0 add-on that comes with FrameMaker 8.0 with the Acrobat Professional 7.0 installed. The console error received when creating the PDF is:

"Save as PDF failed to post-process the PDF file for Flash Data: errors were encountered in the PDF file.
The PDF file should be intact and usable but may not reflow properly. Check that the destination PDF file is not in use or its permissions, then Save as PDF again. If the problem persists, please contact Adobe Technical Support."

The fix is to remove Acrobat Professional 7.0 permanently and install the FrameMaker add-on or to upgrade to Professional 8.0

I installed Acrobat 8 Pro and it "killed" my Frame 7 distiller. I can no longer create pdfs from Frame.

Is there a way to fix this w/out re-installing Frame?

Kelly,

First, it's kinda rude to hijack someone else's thread and change the subject instead of starting a new one....

And second, if you did the install correctly, the 8 install should have removed the limited distiller shipped with FM 7.

When you select Print in FM, is there an Adobe PDF printer instance? Or nothing?
