Why was Acrobat Pro 9 uninstalled when I installed FrameMaker 12?

re: Why was Acrobat Pro 9 uninstalled when I installed FrameMaker 12?
It probably wasn't. It was just destroyed by a default installation of a stripped-down version of Distiller XI (which is how FM generates PDF).
Unless you (or more likely, your IT person unaware of the issue) make a do-not election during install, this happens. And not having personally installed an FM later than 7, I can't give you details on the dialogs. When IT built me a PC in my last job, I do remember telling them to install CS5 after FM9, to moot this problem.
Meanwhile, re-install the Bat. Someone did keep the install media/image and authentication key, I trust.

You probably installed the PDF Creation Add-on that comes with
FrameMaker. It stomps all over Acrobat. You can't have both installed.
The FrameMaker installation routine does not make it obvious how to
skip installation of the add-on, and installs it by default. Here are
instructions for skipping installation of the add-on:

Unfortunately, you will probably have to uninstall and reinstall
FrameMaker and then uninstall/reinstall or repair Acrobat to fix it.

I had just installed FrameMaker 12 on a virtual machine.
There wasn't an option to install or not install the PDF creation add-on (unlike FrameMaker 11).
Therefore it could be that FrameMaker 12 installs its PDF creation add-on, if it cannot find Acrobat Standard/Professional of the same version.
I do not know whether FrameMaker 12 really deinstalls Acrobat 9 or its distiller.
This must be checked in the installation folder.

The option is there for FM12, but it's not obvious what to click to get it. You need to click on the FM app name (IIRC) for the PDFCreation add-on option to appear on the right side of the install panel.

If installed, I believe the PDF Creation Add-on shows up in the list of
installed programs in Control Panel. If I remember that right, you can
uninstall it from there-- but you will still have to repair or reinstall
Acrobat to solve your problem. The add-on doesn't uninstall Acrobat. It
just breaks it.

That process makes sense. When saving as a PDF, the "distiller" that creates the PDF is either Acrobat Pro, or the PDF Creation add-on.
It turns out that in the System Requirements, FrameMaker 12 is only compatible with Acrobat Pro X and XI. I suspect that the FM installer doesn't even care about stomping all over Acrobat 9...
For this workstation, the damage had already been done. We did the following:
Now, everything works, without having to re-install FM.
The other workstation here already has Acrobat XI, so I'll be sure to un-check the PDF Creation add-on, so that FM doesn't cause problems with Acrobat.
