x-reference (wrong links)

New Here ,
Nov 24, 2008 Nov 24, 2008
I met a very strange thing yesterday. After I printed a Book as a PDF, I found that some of the links in it got corrupt. I checked the fm files and found that all of them linked to the right place. What's more, I tried to find unresolved x-referencs, but in vain.

It really caused much trouble for I often have to print books more than several hundred pages. That is to say, I cannot check all the links in the generated PDF.

Does anyone know "who" is the culprit and how to make sure that this thing won't happen in the future?

Thanks very much!

Alice,

One of the possible issues may be the "Create Named Destinations for
all Paragraphs" setting in your PDF options. This should be turned
*on*. The Optimize PDF feature in FM6/7 was another troublemaker.

Also, you don't mention which version of FM. When you "printed a Book
to PDF", exactly what printer instance are you using and how exactly
is the PDF created?

I am using FM7.2 and Adobe PDF as the printer.

Could "Create Named Destinations for
all Paragraphs" setting cause the problem that I described? "Off" is the recommended settings.

If there is unresolved x-reference, FM will generate Book Error report. I don't know why it didn't do so in my case. :(

Hi Alice,

You should turn _on_ "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs".
If you turn it off, FM might not assign IDs for certain paragraphs, which are needed for cross-referencing (specifically from other files), or for generated lists. See Shlomo Perets web-site for more info: http://www.microtype.com/ImprovePDF14.html

However, as your cross-references are resolved, that should not be the culprit. Did you turn on "Generate Acrobat Data" in the print dialog? That is needed to create hyperlinks in the PDF file out of FM cross-references and hyperlinks and to set the correct page size.

Best regards

Winfried

Hi, Winfried,

I turned on the "Generate Acrobat Data" option.

Why "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" must be selected? I turned it off before, but the links didn't break. It was really weird that they got corrupt this time. :(
