Try the following, in order:

  1. Reboot and try opening the file again.
  2. Make a copy of the problem file. If the copying fails, the issue is with your filesystem. Get a good repair tool and use it.
  3. Try a "Heroic Open" from FrameMaker. This command bypasses a lot of error checking code and does its best to open the file:
    1. Type Esc o H (i.e. press and release the Escape key, then type a lowercase letter o followed by an uppercase (i.e. shifted) letter H.
    2. Choose your problem file, and click Open.
    3. If the file does open, do an immediate Save As MIF
    4. Close the problem file.
    5. Open the MIF that you saved above.
    6. Save the MIF as a FrameMaker file.
  4. Extract any ASCII strings from the file. This might give you most or all of the text you've typed:
    • The Linux "strings" command will do this for you:
      strings myfile.fm > myfile.txt
    • Or use a text editor.

For a Heroic Open, IIRC, you also must have a blank .fm file open before trying it on your problem file.
