I have a Folder Called Parent.

Inside PARENT folder, I have an FM file called CHAPTER1.FM and a sub-folder Child.

Inside the CHILD folder I have a PDF file called ABCD.PDF.

How can I add a link or Cross-Reference to PDF file into the Framemaker???

Thanks you.

Sorry, I’ve never used the hypertext command, so I was just going on what the help & the FM bible (Publishing Fundamentals – Matt Sullivan) said.

To create a link to external Document:

  • I selected a word XXX and assigned a new character format (to differentiate the hypertext)
  • Then I went into the Hypertext Dialog box
  • In Command dropdown (of Hypertext dialog box), I selected Open Document
  • In Sentex section, I typed openlink U:\xxx\xxx\abcd.pdf

then when I clicked Edit Hyper Marker, I got following error message...

Any thoughs???

I think you need a Named Destination within the PDF if you’re going to use the Open Document command.

Thanks for your response Jeff,

I would appreciate if you could elaborate more on that, please. In the Command dropdown there are a lot of choices.

Online help also suggested to select Message Client, and then type in the full path.

I am following all these info, but these are few step process, and it is possible to make mistake at any stage.

Just wondering, how can this process be so complicated???

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Are you trying to have the PDF opened up in Reader? I’d check out the Message Client syntax – message openfile filename

Bingo.

Thanks Jeff, that was it.

In the Message Client Syntex, I was missing a word openfile, message openfile filename

Thank you, appreciate it.

Just needs fine tuning:

In the Message Client Syntex, I added, message openfile relative_path

When I publish the FM Book and move all the files and subfolders to another location, LINKS are BROKEN.

Is there a way to fix that???

Thanks.
