I have a Heading4 with autonumbering. However, when I use a heading 1,2,3 and then use the heading 4, it does not reset.

Heading1 starts with 1.0

Heading2

Heading3

Heading4 say it increments to 1.1.1.10

Heading1starts with 2.0

Heading2

Heading3

Heading4 this shows up as 1.1.1.11 instead of 2.1.1.1

Hi @tekwrite1955:

Is Heading1 an incrementing heading number within a chapter, or is it the chapter number?

  • If the former, use <n+> and not <$chapnum> because <$chapnum> can only increment between documents, not within a single file.
  • If the latter, be sure the book numbering is set to increment the chapter numbers between files.

Please show your autonumber building blocks for each of the paragraph formats. Or see these posts:

It has to be something in the building blocks for heading4.

The heading4 is not resetting when the content goes to a new Heading1
(second image).

Just noticed the heading4 (in the first image) is getting its sequential
number from the Figure Heading which is also wrong.

My brain is not working. The numbering for headings is

H1 (5.1)

S:\t< ><n>< >.<n+>< =0>< >< >< >\t

H2 (5.1.1)

S:\t< ><n>< >.<n>.<n+>< >< >< >

H3 (5.1.1.1)

S:\t< ><$chapnum>< >.<n>.<n>.<n+>< >< >< >

H4 (5.1.1.1.1)

S:\t< ><$chapnum>< >.<n>.<n>.<n+>< >< >< >

Not sure why H3 and H4 are the same? (I inherited the files from the client) 🙂

H4 (5.1.1.1.1)

You will need to put in your tabs, etc.

I should have put my "chapter" numbering in. Not using <$chapnum> but the following:

S:Section < ><n5>< >< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>\ \

Yes I know the section number is hard coded and would rather not mess with that.

Then just replace <$chapnum> with <n=5>
