Looking for shortcut: Deleting a whole word

Hey,

I would like to delete a whole word in Framemaker using shortcuts. I see the posibility using [ctrl + Delete] (delete following word) but I would like to delete a previous word using [ctrl + backspace] aswell. Since I'm writing a lot of text with FrameMaker and this shortcut can be used in almost every other application I find that unconvienent. Is there a possiblity to set that up for Framemaker?

Thanks in Advance!

According to Klaus Daube's compendium, you should be able to do just that.

<tests in FM 2019>

Yep. Both of those shortcuts work.

Delete the word after the cursor: Ctrl+Del

Delete the word before the cursor: Ctrl+Bkspace

Either works for the word your cursor is currently in.

I suppose it could be different for a German keyboard? Check the contents of the wincmds.cfg file in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2019\fminit\configui\UnStructured\WYSIWYGView

(Replace "Unstructured" with "Structured" if that's the interface you use.)

The wincmds.cfg file defines all the keyboard shortcuts available to you. You should have a block like this in the Keyboard Shortcuts section:

<Modify DeleteBack1Char <KeySequence ^ h > >
<Modify DeleteBackToPrevWordEnd <KeySequence ^/BkSp > >
<Modify DeleteForw1Char <KeySequence /Delete > >
<Modify DeleteForwToNextWordEnd <KeySequence ^ /Delete > >
<Modify DeleteForwToEndOfLine <KeySequence ^+/Delete > >

where ^ indicates the Control key, + indicates the Shift key, and / indicates the following word is a keysym word.

Valid keysym words: Up, Down, Left, Right, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, Return, Tab, BkSp, Space, Delete, Insert, F1 through F16, and Escape

If the commands are correct in the wincmds.cfg file, then I'm not sure what to suggest. Maybe there's another .cfg file that is overriding it, or you have a plugin or script that is overriding it?

What does happen when you try to use those shortcuts?

first of all, thank you for coming back to me so quick and with such effort.

I checked the file, it seems to be identical on my end:

<Modify DeleteBack1Char <KeySequence ^h> >
<Modify DeleteBackToPrevWordEnd <KeySequence ^/BkSp> >
<Modify DeleteForw1Char <KeySequence /Delete> >
<Modify DeleteForwToNextWordEnd <KeySequence ^/Delete> >
<Modify DeleteForwToEndOfLine <KeySequence ^+/Delete> >

Only the Backspace combination isn't working (tried ctrl+backspace / ctrl+shift+backspace). Single press of Backspace and all other combinations are working properly.

I'm running 32 bit version of FM with no plugins.

Ooo, yeah, Jeff's right. That version of FM 2019 is about two or three updates old. Try updating to the latest release (that'd be 6) and see if that helps.

Hi,

I tested these keyboard shortcuts on a German keyboard.

Delete the word after the cursor: Ctrl+Del - works, when the insertion mark is before the space before the word and when the insertion mark is directly before the word.

Delete the word before the cursor: Ctrl+Bkspace - works only when the insertion mark is directly before the word. It does not work, when there is a space between the word and the insertion mark.

I always mark the word(s) with CTRL+SHIFT+ARROW, before I press either DEL or BACKSPACE.

Best regards

Winfried

Update:

There seems to be something weird going on. It worked sometimes now. But I noticed it stopped working after a while. After some testing i noticed when I click on the "paragraph formats" workspace ctrl+backspace stops working in the document. It works again when I switch to another document and then back.
