(FM12 on Win7)

When I run Format > Document > Optimize PDF Size > Optimize File, the FM console includes information like the sample below.

Does this indicate errors that the process corrected, residual errors, or benign information?

If residual errors, what do they indicate so I know where to go to fix them?

If FM didn't throw any errors about broken x-refs or missing graphics when you open those files, I wouldn't be too concerned about the console message.

Did you have the "Cancel on Error" option enabled in the Optimization Options? If not, then you may have to dig a bit [paragraph IDs aren't readily visibly unless you're viewing a MIF document in a text editor].

I suspect that these are probably benign. One of the features of the Optimize step is to remove/ignore what FM deems to be unnecessary info (i.e. IDs that become named destinations) for inclusion in the PDF. Having all of these IDs do bloat the PDF file, but guarantee that all links work properly (hence you have the option of specifying "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs and Elements" in the Links tab of the PDF Setup to override the "optimization").

Note: you can also use Acrobat to [more effectively] optimize an existing PDF file.

@Arnis Gubins

Thanks.

The book update log is clean.

I did not enable Cancel on Error. Will try that next.

Best,

While I'm at it, here's the last part of the Distiller log for a print job that includes all of the same content  What doe the warnings mean?

It sounds like you may have used the same file twice in a book structure or somehow have multiple newlink destinations using the same name or you've selected multiple copies using the print dialog. FM also sometimes creates duplicate entries (but that many seems odd), and this type of warning can be ignored as only the first unique destination specified gets registered in the PDF - you might have to test your links to ensure that everything is working correctly.

In general, I would not recommend using FM's optimization for PDFs. Create the PDF and optimize it (i.e. shrink it) in Acrobat.

Also, how are you creating your PDFs - SaveAsPDF or printing to postscript and distilling? Nowadays, using the SaveAsPDF option is the recommended route.

Arnis,

Thanks.

Using SaveAsPDF. Quite convenient.

Yes, a few FM text insets are used several times throughout a .book.

Best,
