Fresco on iOS: Text tool does not work.

Hi,
I want to report an issue in Fresco 5.7.2 for iOS. Sadly the chat bot won't let me submit a bug report so I'll have to do it here.
Whenever I choose the Text tool, a default text (Lorem ipsum) appears and there is just no way to edit the text. If I type on my Folio keyboard, it only chooses some other tool. If I double tap the text, it zooms to that text but the text is not selected. If I single tap the text, nothing happens. If I two finger tap the text, nothing happens. If I tap and hold, nothing happens. None of the "normal" ways to edit the text are working.
This worked fine in previous versions of Fresco, so I suspect it is a new bug. I also tried saving the file and opening it on a colleague's Ipad (with a much older version of Fresco) and there the text tool worked perfectly. My advice to this colleague is to not update his old Fresco until this issue has been resolved...
I'm running an Ipad Pro with iOS 17.6.1, Apple Pencil and a Folio keyboard. The keyboard works perfectly in all other apps I know.
I've been discussing the issue at https://www.reddit.com/r/AdobeFresco/comments/1e4dnaa/how_to_edit_text/ and the advice I got was to contact the official support, since apparently the Text tool does not work as it should.

Hello @anderfoo,
Sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind updating the OS and the Fresco app to the latest version and checking if it helps?

If the problem persists, kindly share a screen recording of the problem so we can check it with the team.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,

I checked this morning and then I had iPadOS 17.6.1 and Fresco 6.0.0, both were the latest available versions. Nothing changed since last week; text editing did not work.
Now I see that iPadOS 18.0 has been launched and I'll give that a try.

Now I tried in iPadOS 18.0 and there's no difference.
Here's a screen recording: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/z52zg20psv53x0mdb1rfp/C57DE5F2-2FD3-4CA1-873B-A70B99D255E8.MP4?rlkey=...
I tried both tapping, double tapping, etc., but I guess the screen recording does not really show what I do, it just shows the result. Nothing really happens to the text, but:
- When I double tap the text, it zooms to the text field.
- When I tap and hold it changes the text color to white.
- When I have selected the text and enter something on the keyboard, you may notice that it jumps between the various tools.
- If I hit the keyboard symbol below the text, a menu appears where I can select "copy", "cut" or "delete". None of those options seem to do anything (nothing disappears, and if I try to paste afterwards, nothing gets pasted.

Since this appears not to be solved yet; could you please advice us on how to downgrade to an older version of Fresco, particularly one where the text tool isn't broken?
And tell us when you have resolved the issue in a newer version.

Hi @anderfoo @nolanzone @Nolan_zone,
Thank you for sharing the details of this issue. We’ve logged a bug for this to be investigated by the product team, and they are looking into it. We’ll provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, could you please assist us by trying the following steps and providing additional details?
1. Interaction Method:
• Are you tapping on the screen or using the keyboard’s trackpad to double-click the text?
• Have you tried both workflows and do they result in the same issue?
2. Enable ‘Show Touches’:
• Please enable the ‘Show touches’ setting in the app under Settings > Input > Touch. This will help us identify where taps or clicks are occurring.
3. Check Without Folio Keyboard:
• Disconnect the Folio keyboard and test the Text tool using only touch and the Apple Pencil. Let us know if the issue persists. This will help determine whether this is a Fresco-specific issue or a compatibility issue with the Folio keyboard.
4. iPad and App Details:
• Share your iPad model and confirm if both iOS and Fresco are updated to their latest versions. Let us know if you notice any changes after ensuring both are up to date.
5. @anderfoo Please confirm the Fresco, iOS version, and iPad model on which this works fine for your colleague.
Due to App Store restrictions, reverting to an older version of Fresco isn’t an option for iPads, though it is possible for Windows devices.
We appreciate your effort in sharing these details to help the team investigate the issue further.
Best regards,
Anshul Saini

1. interaction method: Yes, I have tried both tapping or tap&hold on the screen, and on the keyboard. No difference. I also try tapping the keyboard icon below Lorem ipsum, but nothing happens.
2. I have enabled "Show touches" and uploaded a new recording to https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/sqowb49pagq1sp6amercv/With-touch-visible.MP4?rlkey=x3pm879obol0wroulg...
3. Yes, when I disconnect the keyboard, an on screen keyboard pops up and allows me to enter/edit the text. This is impractical since it covers more than half of the screen, but it is a workaround. I hope this can make it possible for you to figure out what's going on and resolve the issue.
4. iOS 18.1.1, Fresco 6.1.3.
5. I'll check with my colleague.

Based on your feedback and additional testing, the product team has thoroughly investigated this issue. Here are the findings so far:
1. Entering Edit Mode:
• When double-tapping the text, the app zooms into the text field, but the expected behavior (highlighting the text in blue and entering edit mode) is not occurring consistently. This prevents users from typing or editing text properly.
• The team has identified this as a bug. It seems that the app enters edit mode but exits unintentionally due to a system interaction issue.
2. Interaction with the Magic Folio Keyboard:
•The problem appears to be specific to certain keyboard setups, like the Magic Folio Keyboard for iPad 10th Gen.
Other configurations (e.g., Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard Pro, or external keyboard) are working as expected.
•Disconnecting the Folio Keyboard temporarily resolves the issue by enabling the on-screen keyboard, which allows text editing as expected.
3. Other Observations
• Long-pressing the text activates the eyedropper, which is the intended behavior but can be confusing when users are attempting to select or edit text.
• When typing on the keyboard without entering edit mode, the app interprets key presses as shortcuts, which is why tools are switching.

Sure!
1. My colleague checked and says he's still using Fresco 4.0.1 and has not dared to update due to the issues I experience with newer versions.
2. I'm using an iPad Pro, 12.9 inches, sixth generation, according to Settings > General > About > Model Name.
Thank you for looking further into this.
Best regards,
Anders

Hi @anderfoo,
Thank you for sharing these updates. Based on your iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 6th generation) and the details provided, we’d like to confirm whether you’re using the Magic Keyboard or the Magic Keyboard Folio with your setup. Here’s how you can verify:
1. Magic Keyboard: Compatible with iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 6th gen). More details here.
2. Magic Keyboard Folio: Designed for the iPad (10th generation) and not listed as compatible with your iPad model. Details here.
Knowing which one you’re using will help confirm if compatibility with your keyboard setup contributes to the issue.
Looking forward to your confirmation!
Best regards,
Anshul Saini

This is the keyboard I have. The QWERTY version with Norwegian letters, ordered from here a couple of years ago. It works great in other apps.

Thanks for all the details you’ve provided so far, @anderfoo. The product team reviewed your screen recordings, and based on their observations, the iPad is behaving as if it briefly enters text-editing mode but then exits it. They suggest ensuring that you’re single-tapping the keyboard icon rather than double-tapping, as tapping multiple times could cause it to exit text-editing mode.
I've attached a link to a reference video (IMG_3546_720p.mov) demonstrating expected behavior on an iPad with the Magic Keyboard, including cases where tapping too many times disrupts text input. If single-tapping still doesn’t work, the product team is open to troubleshooting further via a live debug session.
Best,
Anshul Saini
