Hard pastel shows repeating patterns at high resolution

When I use the hard pastel at high resolution, a repeating patterns shows up. Is there any way to prevent this?

I see a similar result with the graphite stick. My assumption is that the brush is based on a pattern and as it repeats it has a clear edge rather than becoming a continuous patch of colour.
