Artboards Discussion - Feedback for Jan PreRelease Webinar

Sorry to miss the prerelease webinar, I am really interested in Artboards. I use them constanly in my work as I create different layouts of the same artwork within one project.

I would like to see these three artboard settings available on Adobe Illustrator Desktop:

1. Add plus icons on each side of an artboard, only when selecting the Artboard Tool. That way we can make a new artboard on any side of our current artboard.

A. When the new artboard is created, make it the same size as the current artboard, automatically.

B. When adding an artboard on Illustrator on the iPad, you can choose the size you want the new artboard to be. That's awesome!

2. Name of the artboard and the size of the artboard above the top left corner so we can recognize the artboard at a glance. The name is visible on Illustrator on the iPad. I like that!

3. Comparable sizing in artboard measurements. Some artboards sizes are pixels and others are in inches, but the pixel boards look huge compared to inches. Why?

Can we make the sizes consistent please?

Why are 1920 pixels equal 26 inches?

Is 6inches less than 1920 pixels? Why?

If this is the wrong forum, then please let me know.

Thank you!

DTM

Dan, welcome!

There one several existing requests you mention here (and most of them are known to the team, AFAIK:

  1. Add Plus buttons as the sides of a selected artboard to quickly add new artboards
  2. Provide an option for making artboard names / numbers visible on the artboard (like when editing art...
  3. This one is tricky. Ai is build upon PostSctipt, and it postulates 1 pixel equals 1 point. And it takes 72 points to make an inch, that’s 'resolution', 72 ppi. It’s hardcoded and won’t bulge. So 1920 px (pt!) / 72 = 26.6(6)" — that’s why.

There isn’t a general request to unbind the resolution and disable conversion even, so Ai uses abstract units... I bet this change would be insanely complicated to pull off (although I really wanted to ask for it, because I often have to move artwork between different media... maybe I did? I should recheck).

But I added you as a voter for the first two at UserVoice 🙂

Ah, found the request about changing the default resolution!

Ability to change resolution when setting pixels as a unit

I mentioned on the call but would like reiterate a request for setting where new artboards are added, not automatically to the right leading to them hitting a maximum canvas size.
A page preview as per InDesign Pages and re-ordering in Artboards panel should re-order the actual artboards as with InDesign Pages.
