If you've closed the Toolbar, then you can do either of the following to open it:
Go to Window > Toolbars > Advanced (you can also select Basic for fewer tools or create a toolbar containing the tools you want)
Go to Window > Workspace > Essentials Classic (or any of the other workspaces that will open the Toolbar--Essentials Classic will also open the Control bar above the artboard)
