Adobe Illustrator - Taking forever to save and behaving weird.

Community Beginner ,
Nov 20, 2025 Nov 20, 2025

I have a new laptop with Windows 11.
I installed Adobe Illustrator latest version (30.0), no updates outstanding.
I created a file (less than 2MB in size).
Located in a folder on the Desktop (C Drive).
When I save the file it takes approx. 5 mins to save. During this time Illustrator tells me it is not responding.
I have created a test file with one rectangle on the canvas.
I selected file>save to save the file to the same folder on the desktop.
Nothing seemed to happen...the file name still displayed an asterix (*) indicating that changes had not been saved.
I tried to select file>save again, however, it is greyed out.
I selected file>save as instead...I get a message saying "The document "Untitled-2.ai" is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete.
I attempted to save the file again. This time the save option is available. I selected it and the same thing happened again.
What the **** is going on?

Hello Matelot@Calvary,

This does seem troubling. Could you check if the folder you're saving to is being synced/backed up by any other application, such as OneDrive/Dropbox/etc? If yes, try temporarily disabling the backup/sync software to see if it helps.

Also, try running Illustrator after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Windows) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

When Illustrator has trouble accessing the printer, that might interfere with saving.

You could either try and set that up again or set up a PDF printer as the default printer.

Illustrator saves information about the printer into the file and therefore this is somewhat important.

Can you disable "Save in background" in the preferences. Does it work better then?

Do you have a printer driver set up?

Is the printer turned on?

Hi Monika, first up, thank you for your assistance.

I disabled the "Save in background" option, made a change to my document and saved it...it still takes at lease 5 minutes to save.

I do not have a printer installed. locally on the laptop. There is, however, a printer available on my work's network. I work remotely and rarely print anything. Could this be causing an issue?

Hi Anubhav, thank you for your assistance.

I have ensured the Illustrator documents I am working on are kept on my local drive (C:\) while they are being worked on. Saving files is almost instant now.
