Adobe, please quit messing with me! Why does the save dialog now remember the last saved file type?

Since I updated to Illustrator 29.6 several days ago, I've realized that some of the Illustrator documents I saved aren't really Illustrator documents. They are, instead, PDF files without Illustrator editing preserved. Ugh! I didn't realize that Adobe had implemented a new feature where the Save dialog will remember the filetype last saved. The last step in my workflow is to save a small-as-possible PDF file to share with my sales rep and client. But then, when I start working on the next project, and create a new file from a template, when I save it, I have to be very careful that it is actually saving a .ai file instead of saving a PDF that I won't be able to edit later. I see lots of repeated work in my future. Thanks Adobe!

Please make this "file type memory" a preference that we can turn on or off, as preferred!!!!

This is also driving me crazy. I'm so used to saving the .ai working file first and then a .pdf later. I keep hitting enter to save as a reflex and not seeing it has left the previous .pdf setting. 
Please give us the option to turn this off Adobe
