I am not sure what changed but the latest update (AI 28.6) has made AI slow and glitchy. It was taking me several to a few 10s of seconds to type a few letter words because it was so laggy. I am working on a 2023 MacBook Pro with the M2 Max CPU/GPU and 64 GB of LPDDR5 memory (i.e., the laptop has way more than enough power). Please fix this because it is insufferable to sit and wait for the simplest of tasks operating on the fewest of vectors. Before this update I was manipulating billions of vector graphics in fractions of a second but now it takes several seconds to highlight a single line.

Do you have a window manager such as Rectangle or Magnet installed?
Too many fonts?

No and no and no... I am not working on an old, clunky computer. My laptop was maxed out when I bought it. The exact same stuff I did this morning would have taken me a few minutes prior to v28.6 but now takes several 10s of minutes because I am waiting or have to undo due to glitchy motion or incorrect changes (due to lag). It is not my computer, it is something that changed in AI (I use this software often so I am very familliar with how it usually performs on any given file).

Do you have multiple monitors? You you have the software Display Pilot installed? If so: this is known to cause that issue.
Some people could solve this by uninstalling, running the Adobe Cleaner tool and reinstalling.

Yes, I have a second monitor but do not have Display Pilot installed. I would be astounded if multiple monitors caused graphics problems when it has never caused issues before. That clearly indicates a problem in the software during one of the updates because I have been using multiple monitors for 20+ years.

Please try it without the second monitor just to figure out where to search for the issue
Did you already try the Cleaner tool route?

I tried quitting and restarting AI with and without the second monitor plugged in. The glitchy/laggy issue seems to have disappeared, which is more troubling than it persisting. I did have Adobe Distiller running before and now I am worried that was the source of the issue somehow, which is insanely annoying. Either way it stopped and I am not sure what precisely changed.

What do you need Distiller for?
You can directly export PDFs from Illustrator.

Mac OS no longer supports PS or EPS files in Preview, so Distiller is the fastest non-Unix approach to converting those files to PDF for quick viewing. Opening AI to export the file would be a lot of overkill.

An EPS file can contain an AI file as private data which you are effectively erasing when using Distiller on the file. Therefore ruining editing.
Maybe try Adobe Bridge.

No, sorry, the original PS files in question here are generated by some computer code I wrote, not AI. I am not trying to run AI on PDF output from Distiller.

If you suspect Distiller of causing this, I would ask over in the Acrobat forum about it. They might have more insights about possible issues.

Hello @Zarat80,
We understand how frustrating it can be to encounter performance issues in Illustrator in the middle of work. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared in this help article (https://adobe.ly/3X20w4e) and let us know if they help?
Also, try running Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav

I had already done most of the things on that list before even reading it. I had to downgrade all the software by two versions, and now everything works without any issues. The latest version is about 20 times slower, especially Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. It seems to affect my entire system, as even Windows Explorer runs slower with the latest version of Adobe apps. It's very frustrating since I'm on a weekly deadline. I lost 2-3 hours searching for a solution to this problem . Only downgrading worked

Same here. Illustrator 28.6 is a disaster for me. Random freezing, glitchy, even selecting objects to drag/move them is slow and glitchy. Just had to force quit it after a total lock up. Going to try downgrading the version.

On a Mac?
Do you have a window manager installed? Rectangle or Magnet? They do not play well with Illustrator.
Also: Proofpoint or Display Pilot could cause that.

Same here on Windows (brandnew PC) 28.6 is a desaster. Downgraded to 28.5 again. Works perfectly fine.

same to me
28.6 is terrible performance issues (on Windows PC, 32GB of Ram, Intel Core i5 Gen 12th)

Hello @terngz,
We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. Would you mind confirming if the suggestions shared above helped? If not, kindly share more details, like the exact version of the OS/Illustrator, system report (https://adobe.ly/4dv4VCw), and a screen recording of the problem (https://adobe.ly/3yGkngb), so we can investigate this further?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav
