ai file appear black when opened

I received an ai logo file from a client and when I open the file, I am unable to select any objects. It appears to be just a box. The appearance resembles a 90% transparent black box over the logo where I can faintly see the image. There are grouped layers, but I cannot release them or ungroup them. I pulled the ai file into InDesign and it looked fine, however I want to use the file obtain correct colors for the rest of the project. The color panel is cleared. (see below for image refs.)
There is most likely a simple answer to which I am oblivious, but at this point I remain oblivious. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

If you make the layers panel wider then one could see what it says in the brackets. But basically I don't think there is a lot to edit.

According to the layers panel it is an image in a clipping mask.
