AI File Format specification

Hello,

I hope someone can help me.

We would like to write out native .ai files from our applications as our customers are interested in getting .ai files out of our applications to use them further with Illustrator.

.ai Files are "enriched" pdf files.

We do have our own versatile PDF Engine so adding the needed additional parts should not be complicated if we have a specification.

Does someone know where to get it?

Maybe someone can point me to a responsible person inside of adobe to whom we can talk to.

thanks for your help,

You can ask for access here: http://adobeprerelease.com/

I don't know if it's possible to get the format specifications, but the Prerelease program is as close to the developers as you can get. And they should know the rest.

Are you in the prerelease?

This should be the natural way to try and get information such as this one.

Hi Monika,

Thanks for your reply!

Prerelease? of Illustrator?

If this is the way to go I will go that way. It is our first try to contact Adobe.

Do you have any pointers on how to get there?

Thanks in advance

I wrote an app back in the 1990s that generated .ai (or maybe .eps) files, and that spec was documented at that time. That was many versions ago when Illustrator files were in ASCII format, which Illustrator can still read. I know it's not ideal, but perhaps it's adequate for your purposes.
