AI Generation Missing Parts on Medium Detail (Illustrator 29.4 on macOS Sequoia 15.4.1)

Community Beginner ,
Apr 27, 2025 Apr 27, 2025

Up until last week I have never experienced an issue with the AI generation feature. But half way through the day it stopped completing a piece. Whole segments of the image are missing.

I've noticed that if I raise the detail level it's fine, but when I reduce the details (to medium) then legs or hands or half the face are no longer completed. All my AI settings are on default and I've never had an issue with it until now. Below is a clear example of a generation failing. The one on the right is the same but with higher detail and that worked.

I've tried deleting Scratch Disk AI files from the /library/preference/etc etc folder but all that has done is saved me HD space it hasn't fixed anything.

I'm using Illustrator Version: 29.4 on a a Apple M1 Ulta running Sequoia 15.4.1

Hi @FryLock,

I totally get the frustration. I would like to provide an update that I checked with the product team regarding the issue. They were able to reproduce the behavior and confirmed that it only occurs when the transparency grid is enabled. A bug has been logged, and the team is working on the fix. Also, they would like to understand why the user specifically needs the transparency grid turned on during generation, and whether the issue still occurs when the transparency grid is turne

You can try deleting your Illustrator preference folder entirely. This will reset the program to its defaults and—if the issue is being caused by program corruption—restore full performance.

To delete preferences on a Mac:

The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files in this manner is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Sadly this did not work. I did delete the plist and the version folder as you suggested. Though before I did I noticed that in the GenAITextToVectors folder the png versions of the vector generations were complete, no missing elements. So somewhere in the pipeline it has been fully completed, but the vector version is missing parts. I have checked to see if they were hidden or somehting, but nope they are just not there. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Hello @FryLock,

I tried replicating this on my end but could not. Could you share a sample prompt, along with screenshots of the exact settings used, so I can check this on my end?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Helllo Anubhav,

The first image I made fresh today. It shows the first 3 generated results. As you can see the 2nd one is fine as I know sometimes it won't generate white if the box I use is filled white.  But the first and third are clear example of the generating not finishing.

The simple prompt was "an office manager waving goodbye" - I've also shown that I have not tweaked anything.

The second image is from the folder USER/Library/Preferences/Adobe IllustratorVERSION/en_US/GenAITextToVectors which has .png's versions which are all complete. This reveals the generation worked, but for some reason has not supplied all the vector layers for me to use.

The third image is just an example of stuff I generated last year. They were all just simple prompts and worked without any missing elements.

Hi @FryLock,

Thanks again for sharing all the details. I would recommend updating Illustrator to the latest version 29.5 and checking if the issue still persists, as there have been some improvements and fixes around generation features in the latest release.

Also, could you confirm if this happens with other simple prompts too, or only when generating 'people' prompts where hands or legs are involved?

Additionally, just to make sure, please try signing out of the Creative Cloud app and signing back in once, and then test the generation again to see if it refreshes the process.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,

I have updated to 29.5 and signed out and back into creative cloud.

After generating various subjects I have discovered anything that is "alive" like an animal, plant, human are more often than not missing elements. But the worst offender is definately any subject with humans. A bird might be missing its beak for example. But any topic that in inorganic such a vehicles or buildings (and visually more complex) don't seem to be missing anything.

During my testing I discovered the same prompt works if I generate the art as a Scene. If I take that same prompt and change it back to Subject then we are missing parts again.

Hi @FryLock,

Thanks so much for following up and sharing your observations! As Anubhav mentioned earlier, I also tried reproducing the issue on my end but wasn't able to see the same behavior. Since it seems to happen specifically when generating 'Subjects' with lower detail and mainly with organic prompts like humans or animals, I would like to take a closer look with our team.

Would you be able to share a short screen recording showing your workflow from entering the prompt, selecting the settings, to the incomplete vector generation result? Please make sure the panel settings are visible in the recording so we can cross-check everything with the exact setup you're using.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hello,

Sorry for the delayed response. I didn't have time at work to do a recording.

Here is the screen recording you requested. No editing and possibly too long, but as you will see it started out well but after a few creations it started losing layers. I also showed that "subjects" were failing, while "scenes" had no issues.

Hi @FryLock,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share the screen recording. I could clearly see how the generations start out fine and then begin dropping layers.

For now, please try the following steps and see if they help:

1. Close all Adobe applications.

2. Navigate to the following folder location and rename the UXP folder to UXP.old:

macOS: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/UXP

Relaunch Illustrator.

Let me know if this resolves the issue! We’re actively reviewing this with the team and your observations are invaluable for our investigation.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Abhishek

Hello @Abhishek Rao,

I renamed the folder as recommened and for safety restarted the computer. No Adobe application was open when I renamed the folder. And sadly there was no change. The first 3 results were missing skin and clothing layers.

Hi @FryLock,

Thanks so much for trying that and for the quick follow-up. I've gone ahead and shared all your observations and the screen recording with our product team. I'll keep monitoring this and will make sure to update you as soon as I hear back from them.

Looking forward to sharing more updates soon!

@Abhishek Rao

Since it's been quiet on the Adobe front, I gave Illustrator a fresh instal and it worked twice, but after the third go generated elements were no longer being created as per usual. As you can imagine this is becoming very frustrating when it's a part of the package and not a bonus feature.

Cheers,
