I am trying to align artwork on one layer into the center of a square on another layer.   everytime I try to align the artwork to the center of the square, the square and the artwork move.  I don't want the square to move as I am using that as my template.  how can I lock the square up so it doesn't move? or only move the artwork?

Given that the dog and the "G" are part of one group, you may just select both the square and the group, click once again on the square to make it the key object and then centre align in the Align palette.
