I mean a temporary change without the need to move over to Photoshop?
I would like to change the color of the light gray paper texture with the eyedropper tool, I mean to pick a color with the eye dropper tool, from the image.

For greyscale images it should work to just pick a color from somewhere. But the effect still might not look like what you imagine. This JPEG is already applied as a pattern? Then it will not work. The color has to be applied first.

The light grey paper texture is a JPG swatch, and it's already applied.
I don't know the theory how you get the best color reproduction.
I could use transparency blend modes for example difference and exclusion, anything else I thinks needs to be done in Photoshop.
What is the best way to totally recolor a paper texture?
Not just tint, but totally recolor, change the color?
But to not loose the texture, it must be a tint, I think.

How do I select only the swatch?

Usually I use Edit Cilor in Illustrator to change colors of bitmaps without Ps
or Create Object Mosaic for creating swatches from image.

The issue is that the Object Mosaic method requires embedding images, and paper textures have a very big file size.
Instead now I am usign this method:
How to Insert an Image Into a Shape in Illustrator 2022 - YouTube
to insert my image into the shape.
I will pick he color required in Illustrator, then "edit original" and do the color magic to the texture in Photoshop.
I also had my brushes embedded in my AI file (AI is not the final format for me, everything will be moved over to InDesign) so my GPU preview simply stopped once I embedded my paper textures (because JPG swatches alro require embedding the image), so that was almost 1 GB file size to handle for my i5 processor (brushes + 250 MB print quality image + embedded paper textures).

Meanwhile I realized that I should open my brushes from a dedicated AI MyBrushes file, instead of having them in my work AI file where I produce my graphics.

But I don't have edit original for the TIF paper texture, in the menu.
Where is the "edit original" option for my paper texture?
It's selected in the layers panel.

Edit original is only active for linked images. Only they have an original somewhere else.

That image is linked with this method.

There is an Edit in Photoshop button in your control panel at the top.
