Anchor points & Gradient Problem

I've been fighting this all week and cannot figure for the life of me what is happening. I have a couple of issues listed below. These have only happened since the latest illustrator update.

  1. I build my object with acute corner points and this little end nodule shows up. (*I am not using a stroke*) It goes away when I enlarge the corner, but of course, not the angle I need for my design. I've tried to expand the object, and that nodule is still visible, but I am not able to grab it to remove/adjust it.
  2. When applying a gradient to a compound object, these little path lines show up.  I've never seen this done before and have no idea how to remove them. Again, they're visible, but I'm not able to grab them.

Thanks for your help!

Does the issue go away if you turn on the CPU preview in the View menu?
