Anchor points -Gone?

I am a novice with illustrator and computers generally. But with this new version of AI I do not seem to be able to use Anchor Points to trace around part of a picture I want to keep.

What might have touched to make this feature become disabled.

Could some kind person talk me through it slowly for me to be able to proceed...

Probably View > Show edges helps?

Your layer or element could be locked.

Or - as @Monika Gause  has already said:

perhaps you have accidentally hide the edges ( Shortcut switch on/off -> [Ctrl] + [H] ).

It turns out that I had mis-understood the workings of Anchor points. I could do what I wanted all the time I was just selecting the wrong tool!!!
